Greetings again and thanks for the participation in my previous thread. Here is the project:
"Dreamland" by Edgar Allen Poe
1 By a route obscure and lonely,
1 Haunted by ill angels only,
1 Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
1 On a black throne reigns upright,
1 I have reached these lands but newly
1 From an ultimate dim Thule-
1 From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
1 Out of SPACE- out of TIME.
2 Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
2 And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
2 With forms that no man can discover
2 For the tears that drip all over;
3 Mountains toppling evermore
3 Into seas without a shore;
3 Seas that restlessly aspire,
3 Surging, unto skies of fire;
4 Lakes that endlessly outspread
4 Their lone waters- lone and dead,-
4 Their still waters- still and chilly
4 With the snows of the lolling lily.
5 By the lakes that thus outspread
5 Their lone waters, lone and dead,-
5 Their sad waters, sad and chilly
5 With the snows of the lolling lily,-
6 By the mountains- near the river
6 Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,-
6 By the grey woods,- by the swamp
6 Where the toad and the newt encamp-
6 By the dismal tarns and pools
6 Where dwell the Ghouls,-
7 By each spot the most unholy-
7 In each nook most melancholy-
7 There the traveller meets aghast
7 Sheeted Memories of the Past-
8 Shrouded forms that start and sigh
8 As they pass the wanderer by-
8 White-robed forms of friends long given,
8 In agony, to the Earth- and Heaven.
9 For the heart whose woes are legion
9 'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
9 For the spirit that walks in shadow
9 'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
10 But the traveller, travelling through it,
10 May not- dare not openly view it!
10 Never its mysteries are exposed
10 To the weak human eye unclosed;
11 So wills its King, who hath forbid
11 The uplifting of the fringed lid;
11 And thus the sad Soul that here passes
11 Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
12 By a route obscure and lonely,
12 Haunted by ill angels only,
12 Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
12 On a black throne reigns upright,
12 I have wandered home but newly
12 From this ultimate dim Thule.

The Assignment:
Your assignment is to produce one photograph that represents your assigned text. The photograph should be 6.5" wide by 4.5" high at 300dpi in its finished state (horizontal orientation).
If you are assigned as a primary photographer and wish to be removed from the assignment, please let me know as soon as possible. One of the alternates will be put into your spot.
Rules:
There are no real rules. I would like for the photos that you submit to look like photographs and not digital art. You may also use a photo that you already have if it ties in nicely with the text in your assignment. The photograph you submit MUST be your own photograph.
Thoughts:
Spend some time reading and thinking about this poem and its overall theme. Do some research on it and get a good understanding of what it means, and what it means to you. Take your time on the photo. This is not a race and there is plenty of time to complete the assignment.
Deadline:
I would like to have all photos submitted to me by July 1, 2005. If we get finished before that, great. If not, that's OK too. I would rather wait and have the best possible photos for this project.
Legal:
Since, by submitting a photo to this project, you are giving the other participating photographers the right to sell/market the entire presentation in unmodified form, I will be preparing a document for each photographer to sign and return to me. Once I have collected all the photos, built the presentation, and received all the signed documents, I will make copies of the documents and mail them out to all the participating photographers, along with a CD ROM containing the final presentation file. I will also make the presentation file available to download so everyone can have it promptly when it's complete.
Marketing Suggestions:
Since everyone participating in this project is already a part of the DPC community, I would suggest one of two things for selling this print here on DPC. 1) We could donate the final print to DPChallenge and let the site profit from it's sales or 2) We could set a selling price that each photographer must follow if selling via DPCPrints.
Comments:
Feel free to post your comments and issues in this thread. You may also feel free to post sample photo ideas and images that you may be working on for the project. The group can discuss them and help you choose if you like. If you post images ot this thread [/b]PLEASE[/b] post thumbnails or links rather than large images.

Thanks again :)

Hmmmm - Lines11 suggest someone in REM sleep! (Rapid Eye Movements) Behind closed eyelids while in dreaming sleep. The King - the conscious mind over the unconscious/subconscious.
(Just some thoughts). Go go go Konador - routing for ya! |

Just my luck -- Edgar Allen Poe
My license plate reads NVRMORE, and I happen to be in Baltimore today and tomorrow -- and I'm an ALTERNATE. :'-(
Ah well... there's always next time.

Don't worry xion I also fell into that group. :) I think this is a wonderful idea and I am thinking of trying to create series of photographs of my own, following the lines of this idea. Thanks for the idea John.

That's alright ... we are in a special club : )
It is especially challenging because the verse is a not-quite-repeat of the first ... I plan to have a go at it anyway -- a challenge with a 7-month deadline is irresistable.
Besides, if John's put together a viable design for a salable product, there's no end to evocative poems in the public domain. A cooperative group publishing project is more likely to get done and marketed and twelve solo projects.
The real problem with this and similar projects (like calendars) seems to be a convenient way to print/bind small quantities economically. I'm hoping the secret plan will soon be revealed, right after John gets back from the Patent and Trademark Office.
I'd suggest modeling payments in somewhat the same way as music: a share for the "composer" of the individual pieces; a share for the producer/record company which assembles the finished album; a share for the "retailer" who actually transfers the product to the public in exchange for payment. The manufacturer's "profit" should be built into the wholesale or base price. |

BTW: I do type and layout for a living and have access to 2-3000 fonts. Let me know if you need anything along that line : ) |

The participants in this project will market (if they want to) in any way they see fit. They will keep the profits from any sales they make. Each participant has the same opportunities as the others. I'm not planning to get into any complicated scheme of 'royalties'.

Hey, I just wanted to mention that I was someone who showed interest too and there was a post about everyone being included. I admire John for coming up with the idea and wish him and all the participants all the best. I really am looking forward to the end result.

thank you john--this is a wonderful idea!
it definitely has me thinking...on first read i was glad that i live at the beach, but then i realized that it may be the wrong coast. ;) now i'm kinda picturing some sort of santa cruz, CA type mountains/cliffs/ocean scene. hmmm, gotta take a vacation sometime, and this could be a good enough reason for a trip as any. :) |

I would consider it a great honour that should Konador 'pass' and if John sought me from among the alternate's mentioned that you would take my place. Dublin, Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and you take really good photos (better than I can)and would make an excellent contribution
P.S. "Wounded Eye of the Redwood" - I like that one :-) |

I couldn't include you properly in the alternates because I could not figure out where you are from. If you would like to give me that info, I will include you in the alternates list. You will also be invited to actively participate in the next project that will start up in a few days :)

John, sorry, I had editted my original comment on the first forum post to say that I was from Florida. I do not need to be added to this project but I would love to be considered for the next project when you get it started.

John. No worries. I am not pushing to get myself included. I would like to see the poeple who are doing it now, including yourself, to do a damn good job :)
I love photography and would love to see it done well. Enjoy the ride. |
