Would the lanmark have to be a typical landmark such as the grand canyon or statue of liberty? Or would somthing such as an atari count as a lanmark in technology. If so would anyone even catch the concept?

I was at Mt St. Helens on Sunday, taking pics of a well known active volcano complete with little puffs of steam/smoke.
Came home, downloaded the photos and at 9pm (that is midnight DPC time) saw the challenge "Landmark".
Boooo hoooo! |
This is something that, while I understand the requirement, really bugs me about DPC. How many of you, like me, end up going to the same place multiple times to retake a picture you took a while back but now would suddenly fit a challenge! It's good if you can improve on the prior pic, but otherwise it's a bit of a time-waster.
For example, I went and shot a bunch of pics inside the Nott Memorial at Union college for B&W. But I ended up using something I shot elsewhere instead. However, while I shot a hundred or more photos at the Memorial, when the next appropos challenge comes (hmmm, landmark), I'll have to go back and shoot it again. After a few times shooting the same place, you start to look a little silly.
Personally, I don't see why we can't have at least a 1 month window on challenge photos.

Just be prepared to get a few low votes due to the voters perception that if they don't recognize it, then it is not a landmark. See my Authority entry and comments for verification of that one! |
This is exactly why I will be sitting this one out... No recognizable landmarks within 500 miles. |

For a non-landmark landmark, a shot something like they used here
Buttonwood
might work...not sure how artistic it might be though.
Probably still get a comment about it not meeting the challenge though.
I beleive I will sit this one out as well.

i'm tired of shots of the Sears Tower and don't really want to shoot a historic building.
thanx for replies and if u guys go overly - than i'll post a shot of it from over the summer. and tell u what it is.(DON'T LET THAT INFLUENCE U)

The highest point in a state, county, town is a landMARK (go look and you will find the metal "placque" in the ground for it). To me it means something that you would use in possibly giving directions, etc.
"Go down to the giant coal boulder in town and take a right."
Just remember that voters take the wording to heart, so hit them over the head with it, if you are trying to get to that ribbon.

Spent two hours out last night to shoot for this challenge. Left home around 11 pm and drove downtown for first choice, only to find the landmark I had in mind was not fully available and not working. Went to "plan B". Drove all the way there and again - something I depended on for the photo had been changed. Arg! I didn't even get my camera out of the bag.
On the bright side...for the plan "B" shot, I think I'll be able to go back and get it at an appropriate time for what I want. I think I was there too late (about 1am). |

Without a doubt, the top 10 will be instantly recognizable. Things that are known locally to be landmarks won't fare well. Simple as that. Call it the average voter mentality, if you will. Not meaning to insult anyone, I just think we all have a little of this in us. Human nature, pure and simple. (OK enough clichés for today)

so are u saying that if the title doesn't tip them off to the nature of it, even if the shot if spectacular they'll still pick a poorly framed problimatic pic. of the grandcanyon(or something they know and have seen many times) over it.-your prob. right i just don't want to except it.... somehow i would like to belive that the ppl here can put 2&2toghther and get 4.
oh well my shot prob. wont fare well i wont even bother to submit it know i'll go take more pics. of big old skycrapers and cry.
note:i have no intention of actualy submitting a shot of a skycraper.
i'm moving to planB know i hope it will be excepted.

The top ten will be great shots in their own right but the "instantly recognizable" factor will help them along immensely.

I hope to prove you wrong. The name is DP challenge so I guess I'll take this one up! I'd be thrilled with a top ten finish, but my landmark won't be known by people outside of my area. Still, you'll know it's a landmark. |

Me, too (assuming I get a chance to shoot at all). You do NOT have to live in Athens or Paris to get a good landmark photo. ;-) |

I can't see myself voting an image lower because I personally don't recognize the landmark. I think this could be very much an open challenge such as the black and white a couple weeks ago. The grey areas, in my mind, would be whether you could consider the subject matter a landmark - i.e. the Atari example earlier in this thread, or someone trying to *fit* something in.
I think this could be a good challenge with lots of good entries. |

A landmark has to be instantly recognisable? Where the F does that come from? I'm going to submit a shot to this challenge that the vast majority of the punters won't immediately recognise, and I'm willing to bet that I get absolutely no 'doesn't meet the challenge' comments: in fact, it's going to meet it perfectly. So there.
And I would happily argue that the Grand Canyon isn't a landmark - something within the canyon could be, but if the canyon itself is, then what is a landscape?

In my opinion a landmark is anything in the outdoors that I can use as a marker for my compass and it to be unique enough to be able to share that marking with others.
It has very little to do with monuments or well know places.

This has more to do with coloquial understanding of a 'landmark' than a literal one. As people have said, a landmark is something by which people can refer to, or identify a place by. Coloquially this reference would normally be a prominent man made or natural feature.
I'll vote high anything that fits that criteria without being shoe-horned - and I agree with dacrazyn:
Originally posted by dacrazyrn: To me it means something that you would use in possibly giving directions, etc.
"Go down to the [insert landmark here] and take a right." |
I also agree that a landmark does not have to be familiar to anyone at all. After all, it's that very purpose of mentioning it to a traveller who needs to find their way!
