I think DPC would benefit by adding a section under the LEARN menu called "Must Have Stuff".

People who are interested in writing product reviews could do so, and each review could have a 'user comments' section with it where others could add to the review or discuss the review itself.

Each time someone comes along and posts a question about what to buy, relatively redundant information gets posted to those threads. People are also being referred offsite fairly regularly to the in depth reviews at DPReview. The DPReviews are excellent, but I think some first hand end user experience is good to have also.

I also see a lot of posts where a particular person wants something new and has a budget to work within. A lot of responses they receive ignore that aspect and send them straight to the top of the line gear.

This section could start out by having categories as follows:

Tripods: Under $100
Tripods: Between $101-$250
Tripods: Over $250
Tripod Heads: Under $100
Tripod Heads: Between $101-$250
Tripod Heads: Over $250

Photo Printers: Under $200
Photo Printers: Over $200

Camera Lenses: Primes
Camera Lenses: Wide Angle / Zoom
Camera Lenses: Normal / Zoom
Camera Lenses: Telephoto / Zoom

Camera Flash Units: All

Accessories: Cable Release / Remote Controls
Accessories: Flash Remote Transmitters
Accessories: Camera Bags (backpacks)
Accessories: Camera Bags (shoulder bags)
Accessories: Camera Bags (other)
Accessories: Portable Storage Devices

Software: Photo Editing Packages
Software: Plugins

This is just the beginning of the list... I think cameras could be included, but they should also include links to the DPReview in depth reviews as well. Each of these reviews could also contain a (buy it now) link which would incorporate with the site affiliations with some of the retailers.

When I read vendor product reviews, espeically on things like camera bags, their capacities are very misleading.

Just some food for thought...

Great idea. Things like this have been suggested before but rarely saw the light of day. Maybe with your name behind it people will listen.

Great idea John.

I also wondered about a "Buy/Sell" kind of classifieds section where we could buy/sell equipment. I thought this had been discussed before, but haven't seen anything about it recently.

good idea, but maybe add a filters section too?

There are lots of items, including filters, that could be added. I just listed a few things to give a general idea of what "I" think would be nice... If the SC/Site Admins like the idea, it would be fun to pursue.

If this were to be implemented, I'd like to see the option to essentially filter the entire list based on what kind of photography you want to do. The person interested in sports/action photography should not be advised to invest money in the same equipment as the person interested in, say, formal portraiture.

So, maybe at the top (or bottom) of the page, there is a dropdown labelled "Filter by Style" or something. Some potential values being: Photojournalism, Macro, Portraiture (Outdoor), Product/Stock, Sports/Fast-action, Creative, Landscapes, Studio/Fashion/Portraiture(indoor), etc.

Good idea - and some photographic examples of what can be achieved with the kit could be added in form of thumbs, etc.
