Spyware looks for known issues - you repor them and then it will find it.

They show you the source code...i can show you source code - you have NO way of knowing of the file i give you to install is THAT source code...

have you seen the new AOL commercials? The ones where the folks are saying " I want a virus, i want my music files erased, I want someone to corrupt my hard drive".

Sure join in...it may be as innocent as a new born babe, or perhaps you can be the first on your block to get in an internet scam!

Me? Nope. Not a chance in 7734

That choice is yours. I am simply offering you my detailed analysis and conclusions. As a network security professional I do know a fair amount about researching this kind of thing.

You are correct that anti-spyware software looks for known issues. My point there is that this client is over a year old and is not listed as a "known issue."

More importantly, Norton Antivirus looks not only for known issues, but also for unknown issues based on suspicious patterns, for example, keylogging activity. The fact is, it does not detect this as a known or unknown threat. That information, coupled with the lack of suspicious activity in the packet traces, and the lack of other users reporting problems around the 'net, suggests strongly to me that there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply Terry,

I'm almost certain that you're right, and indeed, hope for everyone's sake that you are.

For me personally, I'm just not comfortable with it enough to risk it.

No worries... that's why I post the basis for my conclusions, so you can review them and draw your own.

I think think it's cool... but then I'm a numbers junkie. If you're not, then it's not worth the effort.

It seems like it doesn't have any clue at all what key you press -- just of the fact that you are infact pressing a key. I looked at the packet using sygate, and it does look very short -- although I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for.

I programmed in VB for a while, so I know a little bit about it -- it probably just captures an event (keydown) or whatever, and then just adds one to the variable -- not seeking out any information whatsoever on what the actual key that was pressed was.

Oh...and if they want my credit card numbers, they can have them -- not much you can do with a maxed out credit card. :-D

That being said -- I'm closing in strong on first place!! Better pick up the pace langdon.

I figured I couldn't say much if I wasn't part of the crew, so I'm in. Not that I type that much...but what the heck, it's free.

I'm not a big enough nerd. :( Where was this during the days I spent all my time on the computer?
11/28/2004 06:14:26 PM · #61
I wish I'd started doing this when it came up. I just started tonight, so we'll see if I can catch up. :)

I don't type much, but I my wife says I am always in front of the computer. Is there one that measures the number of miles the cursor moves a day? :D

I just joined the team. Can̢۪t say I type. If it measured the movement of the mouse it will have traveled countless miles a day. I will predict I̢۪ll be last in line but any score is a help? Right?

Well, I guess some good does come out of this research paper I have to write for COMM 120. Look out, I'm storming the top ranks! : )

LOL There's a forum I participate in where I write term papers just to reply to a post! lol It sounds like some of those guys in Rant should be on our list tho. But I don't know if it counts cut/paste! ;)

I'm just going to have to start making extremely long, exagurated posts to gain top rank for our team. Normally, this post would be short, but I have decided to use a very large number of adjectives and otherwise forgotten, yet pleasant, describing-words to rightfully give the proper 'feel' (if you will) to my responses.

Remember, if you add just a single, solitary adjective to each otherwise borring word that you type, that can add up to an extremely, immense number of characters throughout the entire day!!! And those punctuation marks -- make sure you always add them in threes!!!
11/28/2004 09:12:30 PM · #69
Those are all great ideas. !!! We could really start to kick some major butt if we all just typed like... well nevermind.!!!!!! Anyways, I better get back to spammulgating elsewhere.

Oh and make lots of mistakes. Backspace truly helps! lol

!!!

haha Great idea with the making mistakes mavrik!!! I also noticed that if you hold the shift key while hitting the exclamation point button, you only get four total keys -- but on the other hand, if you hit the shift key, then hit the exclamation point, then release, and repeat each time you want the exclamation point, you get SIX total!!! That's right SIX!!!

lol -- honestly, I have done nothing different in the last two days that I normally do on my computer -- and that says a lot.

--

I would like, however, to reccommend this keyboard that I have. It's wireless, and the batteries are OVER 12 months old. And judging from my keys pressed just in the past two or three days, it's taken a lot of abuse and still runs just like new!

It is:

Microsoft (R) Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.0 A
Microsoft Corporation - Made in China (S)
~3V 100mA

LOL You're commending your keyboard!?? That's some extra keys right there. I'm on my laptop and by the looks of things - it won't last much longer at this rate! HAHAHAHA (see caps lock is an extra key!)

Actually Caps Lock, as well as Control, Alt, and Shift do not count. :-p

I have an idea. Instead of using the quote thing, why don't you people type out all of the quote yourselves. That should add a lot of keystrokes.

The only problem is then I'll be blaming everyone else for my typos!
