I am leaving for San Francisco tomorrow (for a Thanksgiving get-away with my husband). As nothing will be open on the holiday, we are going to spend the day walking and seeing the sights. Any suggestions for great photography? We are planning to go to the wharf (sea lions), coit tower, the wave organ, land's end, alamo square, musee mechanique (if i can find it) and maybe the japanese gardens. We will be there for 2 days.

Then, Friday night, we are going to Monterey & Pacific Grove until Sunday. We'll be going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Pacific Grove Museum to see the Monarch Migration.

If any of you have suggestions or 'must-see' or 'must-eat' suggestions, let me know asap! I am a vegetarian, but my husband is not. :)

Go to pier 39. There are tons of sea lions at the end. This was taken out there last year.

Try this link, I got some advice when I went to California last year.
San Francisco You might try Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Alcatraz Island.

My wife and I went to pacific grove- I love that town. THe Asimolar state beach is beautiful. There is rocks and fog and deer and the "fishwife" restaurant is great.

When in San fran, the area around coit tower, the italian section has a great asian- italian - pacific feel to it. It is beautiful in San fran. Hope youv'e got a lot of memory.
Have a great time.

definitely go to the palace of fine arts...the gardens and fanciful buildings are rich for photography. it's near the marina...and so close (as i recall) to the wharfs and whatnot

walk across the golden gate bridge (dress warmly!)

go UP to the top of knob hill...the houses are gorgeous and the view of downtown from skyscraper level is excellent...i recall that taylor (reportedly the one of the steepest streets so pace yourself!) had a nice view from the top with a park through which to view the skyline.

here's a cool map i found.

good luck and have fun...

Check out the incredible pawnshops on 3rd, 4th, and 5th streets south of Market!
At one time these were the primary shops where merchant marine sailors would pawn cameras.
There was always a near unbelievable selection to choose from at prices too good to pass up.
I bought a perfect Crown Graphic 4X5 format camera there for $25 in 1961, complete with large case, cut film holders, and a flash attachment.
Still have that camera and used it frequently until about 6 years ago.

The best view of the city (at one time) was the restaurant atop the Mark Hopkins Hotel, especially looking toward the Quoit Tower and Treasure Island.
Guess that dates me a bit, but San Fran is the most photogenic city I have ever visited.

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions!! That photo of the deer in PG is just incredible!!! Wow! Those sea lions are amazing too! I am so excited. I haven't been in 6 years, and that was our 1st time. This is our 2nd visit... and though a much shorter visit, i am a better photographer now than I was then.

I will see if the Pawn shops are open. I hope they are! The Mark Hopkins should be open. I'll see how much the restraunt dishes are!

I have never heard of Asimolar. I will have to check it out. How close is Muir woods?

I have been to Alcatraz, and probably won't go this time. I will go to Nob Hill though. It really is beautiful, thanks for reminding me of it!!!

:) Arie

and then there's the thread started by Rooster in Photography Discussion (I think) earlier today called Murals Blasting with Color . She found some of our best murals and photographed them.

There are more murals in Balmy Alley between 24th and 25th Streets in the Mission if you have time to look them up.

If you are driving down to Monterey/Pacific Grove from San Francisco on Hwy 1, you will probably see a good number of Monarchs at Natural Bridges State park just before you arrive in Santa Cruz. Tiny brown signs direct you from Hwy 1.

P.s. Asilomar is at the very end of Hwy 68 WEST in Pacific Grove, and is a state conference center where many of us lucky Californians get to visit. It has miles of beaches which are stunningly beautiful and of course, open to everyone and their dogs. :>)

... It certainly was, and I remember driving past this stunning scene and thinking how much it looked like this shot from DPC - and then found out that it was the actual one!

Some others I took from Pacific Grove/17 Mile Drive:

The view coming in:

Stinson Beach is worth a visit too:

Terje, your images look just fine. One of them was particularly nostalgic for me: a picture of some islands in the bay where I spent a year of my life. NO, not Alcatraz! Treasure Island Naval Training Center.

Speaking of TI, here is an image of the Golden Gate Bridge I took recently from Treasure Island.

PS: It's cropped rather severely (not a pano) but still, one I like a lot.

Ughhh! I'm jealous! I guess I shouldn't be because I have been there four times already, but it will be quite a while until I get back. I just love San Fransisco and I think it is the most beautiful city in our country. My Aunt, Uncle and cousins live in Via Sereno (near Los Gatos) and My Aunt takes me to the City whenever I visit. I haven't seen half the things on some of the lists, but the city itself is full of great things to see and discover. Have a great time!

If you're a vegetarian, make sure you go to Greens. I don't know the exact address, but it's on the bay overlooking Golden Gate, in a historic district (I think). Most taxi drivers know it, I was told once "It's a vegetarian restaurant, but it's very good" by a surprised driver.

Also good is the Sports Bar, an Italian bar where you can eat very good, but without a menu. They have a handwritten piece of paper with a kind of menu on it, but when you just ask for the specials they give you whatever they have that day, which is most of the time very good.

Have fun!
