At an unimportant shoot today my 10D just died...literally. Batteries were charged, grip was tight, but it turned itself off and it wouldn't turn back on......
Any thoughts? |

You checked that the battery door was properly shut?
My Rebel seems to have a loose latch and has given me reason to panic in the past.
Today, I pulled the camera from the bag and tried to "revive" it realizing I'd left it "on" overnight. It wouldn't wake up until I turned it off and then on. It's not yet a year old and it is somewhat more fickle than I'd expected.... |

I would take the battery completely out. Let it sit for 2 minutes, and then put it back in. That trick works a lot in the electronics world for minor hiccups. If it is something serious, of course, that won't be your solution, but IMO, it is worth a try.

maybe we should start a dead dslr club. Someone else had a problem with theirs this weekend also. Mine has been fried for awhile.
Did you try plugging it in with an ac adaptor? That would let you know if it has anything to do with your batteries. Did your shutter make any unusual noise before it died? Did it look dim when you looked thru the viewfinder? |

I was in the midst of taking a photo when the lens went 'dead' as in there was no focus ( i think that's what happened first) ..I checked the top screen and it flashed for a second then turned itself off.
It hasn't worked since.

How long have you had yours. I've had mine for little over a year now, scared something is about to happen. We should all send ours in and ask for a 20D in return, I think that sounds fair.

I don't own a D10 but this is a hint/question for you: have you tried with other lens? You said it first run out of focus and then shut off. Try anoher lens and see if it works. Maybe it is a problem with the connection between camera and lens.

There are a lot of things which may be wrong. As suggested, try new lens and battery, though if you're using the grip you prolly have more than one. The lens' EF contacts could be the culprit. Make sure the contacts are clean on both the lens and the camera body. Also try a different CF card, make sure its in and that the door is closing properly, just in case.

There is small battery in the 10D that keeps the memory when the main batter is out, I believe you can access from the base of the camera. I would remove grip and ALL batteries. Also swich to a different lens then the one that failed. Hopefully this will be enough to reset the camera.

Good news: it's a battery problem!
Both batteries were acting up a couple months ago (dying fairly fast) this was the first time they just up and died with no warning...the battery bar showed full. Anyway, the camera works now that I recharged the batteries. They died REALLY fast before, though...guess I'll put them on the ol' Christmas list. |

I am so glad you found the problem. I have found myself watching my 10D lately, waiting for it to exhibit some unexpected bad behaviour! It's a relief to know that yours didn't "die" unexpectedly, was just taking a nap. |
