Good morning! - Can anyone offer advice on what type of external flash will work with my Kodak DX6490? There is no hot shoe, but it can attach to a sync cord. I have not been able to find information on what I can use (I would really prefer brand names and suggestions on all the equipment I would need). I'm still a newbie but getting lots of practice. I sometimes shoot photos of children or families in their homes and would like to be able to light from an angle. Thanks for any advice you can offer!!

I have an HP 945 and I've asked the question about using a Vivitar DF200. It doesn't require a hot shoe or a sync cord. It programs itself to your cameras built in flash. You can use it with a flash bracket, or as a stand alone flash. I haven't bought one yet because no one has answered my thread! Anyone have any experiance with this flash?

Here is a link to Kodak's info sheet on the 6490 and external flash usage. Hope this helps! :o)

Hi again - I've read the info on external flashes on Kodak's website but I still don't know what to consider buying. Will any bracket that attaches to the tripod connector under the camera work? Do brackets have hot shoes, and if so do I connect the flash to the bracket and the sync cord to the flash and camera. Or, will most monolights work? I'm sorry, but I'm full of questions and afraid I'll purchase something that won't work with my camera. I went into B & H Photo in NYC recently. Talk about feeling intimidated!!!! Totally awesome store, but I was afraid to come off sounding like a dummy, so I just looked around and left. It was so incredibly busy in there I didn't want to keep anyone else waiting because of me!

Wendy, brackets do not have hot shoes (that I know of), they just hold the flash above your camera. You will need a flash that has a sync cord to plug into your camera or a flash like the Vivitar I mentioned. You may need to do some research on the flashes recommended by Kodak. The Vivitar flash is supposed to be for all cameras, but it may be better to get one that is recommended by Kodak since you have the sync cord plug. I wish I could help out more, but I'm trying to learn this stuff too! :)
