Hi..
Just had my birtday and got a flash (420EX) and I am now trying to work out what to do with it.
Here's a pic of my daughter who always has time for me to be my model :-)
I like the result, the only thing I want to get rid of is the shadow beneath her chin...
I know it's not a great photo, don't care about composition or DOF but what about the lighting...
Here's the pic...
Dont be scared to answer, I can take a whole lot of critique..

Try bouncing the light from a side wall rather than the ceiling.

Are you trying for a candid shot or portrait? If portrait, perhaps you need more than one light source. Look in some photo books for various studio lighting arrangements.
If candid, your original shot is excellent as is, in my opinion. Isn't it nice to have young skin without all the ravages of time and gravity? |

Styrofoam is a material used in packaging or what disposable coffee cups are made of but you don't have to use it as a reflector. You could also use any white reflective material such as cheap posterboard that you can get at any office supply store.
edit: Just looked at your picture and I think the double catchlight in the eyes are distracting and weird looking. I see that you used the flash and Lumiquest 80/20. I think this photo could use softer lighting. Another option to consider and experiment with is a piece of tissue paper over the flash unit aimed at your subject. Hope this helps.

Just looked at your picture and I think the double catchlight in the eyes are distracting and weird looking. Were you using two light sources?

Ok, now I know what it is.
I dont know where the lower catchlight is comming from, maybe my glass table.
I didn't set up the shot, just testing out the flash and found that the shadows beneeth her chin where distracting..
Again, it's just a snapshot...
Anybody knows about a good book or website to learn about using flash?

Philos31...I edited my edit so please see above about using tissue paper over the flash for softer lighting. Then you can aim it directly at your subject.
As for a book recommendation: I read a fabulous book by Susan McCartney about a year ago titled: Mastering Flash Photography. I highly recommend it!
Good luck. |

Its that white sheet packing material, very light and reflective, you can crumple uf aluminium cooking foil, then flatten it out and use that as well.Originally posted by Philos31: Thanks, if I only would know what syrofoam is :-) |
