Well, I bombed. And just to underscore my lack of good sense, now I'll shine a spotlight on my lame attempt in the Calendar challenge by posting a thread. My first effort garnered a lowly ~4.26 this morning... whoo hoo, I placed in the top 96%!! (Not even close to a "glass half full" analogy, but is there at least a bit of wetness at the bottom:?) Almost nowhere to go but up from here. Almost~
By the way, thanks for the 11 commenters. I'm one more beginner who appreciates the critiques and pointers. My "MACRO (no bugs/flowers)" entry is holding right around 5.4, so that is some consolation.

My first effort was a 4.1, and I thought I bombed, but I discovered I COULD do worse & did. Amazingly enough, my lowest rated challenge entry is among someone's favorites!
I get that sinking feeling every time I look at the voting. The best part is that many comments are helpful.
Overall, the experience here is worth every moment. Even though my images are not doing well in the voting, they are getting better (I think). I certainly think more about what I'm doing, now, as opposed to just shooting snapshots.

Hi Ray,
Looking at the comments you received you have the answers right there, nothing too unkind, just follow their comments through and your images will improve, it won't come overnight but the nucleus is there, you had a nicely composed shot,
Keep shootin,
Paul.

Hi Paul,
