I thought it was a challenge about using the ideas of impressionism for photography.
Edit: Coming full circle, as it was pointed out here (since the early impressionist painters were using photography to develop some of their ideas).

Exactly!! Very nice :)
I recently saw some photos using the "LensBaby" -- it's supposed to produce photos much like the Holga, but it's a lens so it can be used with DSLR: LensBabies |

Just a topic note: This is not a thread to discuss the masters challenge. There's another thread for that. I started this thread for ALL SITE MEMBERS to be able to post and discuss experiments with impressionism. Nothing to do with the running masters challenge.
Other than I used a similar challenge description to start us off, and we are running in parallel.

Very nice Shannon, and I really like how the real grass is "in place" at the bottom of the shot.
This is yet another good way to do this. In general, clean water with ripples produces the most painterly effect. Rain works well too.
By the way, thanks for your kind, though undeserved, words about me below (or above, depending on which way you display messages ;). |

Here are a few shots from last weekend:
Not sure if this would qualify as 'impressionism', i call this 'subjective image' after Freeman Patterson... Although at least with half of them the technique wouldn't qualify them for dpc.
As far as complete scenes, i also like how surreal part of the image combines with real sometimes, like on scalvert's shot.

I love your 2nd photo yurasocolov -- IMO it would definitely qualify as impressionistic. The others would, too, I just prefer mine a little less abstract. I'll have to look up the photographer you mentioned. |

Thank you. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant. I was referring to their book, 'photo impressionism and the subjective image', ISBN 1552633276.
Also, this gentleman produces some neat stuff too. |

Nice work Yura, and thanks for the links. I looked through Paul Tonnes work and it's wonderful. I'll have to go through his site in more detail later. I hadn't seen that book, and it's now in my shopping cart.
Regards--Neil |

I love Freeman Patterson's work! IMO, his work would be impressionist in quality.
Tony Sweet is another photographer with similar images.
One problem though is that at least some of these images are done using techniques that are not allowed here (e.g., sandwiching pictures).

Well, perhaps that could be the topic for a separate challenge. Anything you want as far as overlays, number of shots, etc, but no photoshop, or only combining those in photoshop.
Or perhaps a separate site for this kinda stuff, a lot of people don't get it, from my experience. |

Yea, but we can use them here in our non-masters impressionism thread ;-) |

I was just thinking the same thing as I was looking through those photographs -- if we submitted something like that we'd get a lot of "out of focus" etc. comments and low scores. BetterPhoto.com is very good about encouraging creative techniques if you've never tried them. I really have enjoyed my short time there -- it's a very supportive environment, but I think that's because we don't vote on the photos. There are a lot of wonderful folks here, too -- as proven by this thread :D |

Here's a few I took last week, it shows the camera 'strokes' that I was talking about.
Oval strokes : Round strokes : Bridge shaped strokes.

Ah, now i understand what you meant by making the imitation of brush strokes by the camera movement, in the other thread. It indeed adds another aspect to this kind of imagery. Never tried doing that, now i'll just have to =) |

There are other sites that allow for this kind of work. |
