You need to submit examples of your BEST stuff in the application. Funny thing is... I got accepted, but when I re-uploaded those same three photos, they each got rejected... :-)) |

And even when shots do finally get accepted it doesn't mean you'll necessarily make any money either.
I'm wondering if I'm really cut out for stock photography even though some of my stuff has been accepted at a few sites.
Guess I'll keep pluggin' away though. Heh.

i had my first download yesterday.... was also like the same day it got approved :) not a great photo but here it is:
//www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=234920
So far I've been uploading mostly stuff on my hard drive that i think someone might use on a website or something. i haven't even gotten a chance to start firing my d70 at some real "stock" attempts. hopefully I can get some stuff going that'll start selling :)

I joined istockphoto a few months ago and really have not had much time to get "under the hood" of the site. I have had a few days of down time this week at work so I'm trying a little experiment. I bought 10 dollars worth of credits and I'm trying to make a composite image with just the source images from the site. So far it's been hit and miss with quality. I've been trying to use the light-box to get a better view of the image quality but that has been hit and miss too. I work in the multi-media field and I can't tell you the time I've spent looking for the most obscure image for a project. So a site like this is perfect for me. Over all I'm pleased with the site and I'm having fun with my project. I'll post the results later. Good luck to everyone submitting images :) |

So its been almost three weeks since this thread opened..
How's everyone doing on their various stock photography ventures?
I've got a few photos up on three different sites but I've only rec'd one download and that was at istockphoto.com.
How about the rest of you?

I feel a little better now. The same thing happened to me.
I also feel a little worse now. My BEST stuff isn't in the same league as yours. Doubt I'll get anythhing approved.

I tried for istockphoto.com and the first try I got a nice e-mail telling me very flattering things about my photography skills, except the 2nd and 3rd photos needed more clarity. Well, that got me all excited so I tried again with the same 1st photo and two others .... and was rejected!!! Said nothing to do with skill, decision based on photos not being "stock" photos and what they were looking for (I have to admit they were flower photos which was probably a bad choice on my part, but they are my "best" so I used them). I was really upset about it until I tried Dreamstime, where I was accepted on my first two uploads, but haven't had time to try to upload more. Will probably look for other sites to try as well. I'm assuming we can load the same pictures to different stock sites? My strategy will be to try to get on several sites and hope it adds up. Any thoughts on this from people who have some experience with this?

Yes, you can upload the same photos to more than one stock site.
The toughest part with iStock is that with over 115000 images, they already have so many of the 'popular' things. On the contrary, it's nice to have pictures there because they get a lot of traffic.
Good Luck!

Thanks!
I'm fine with what Istock did however disappointing it was. The one thing that I wish they had done was given me an idea if I could try again sometime in the future, whether six months from now, a year from now, or even never. I did thank them for their time and politely asked them to remove me as a member which they did - so I would definately deal with that site again if I could:) |

I've been uploading to iStock and Dreamstime. I have made about $2 from each site which is fine, considering that I haven't uploading that many images (maybe about 30 per site?)
The thing that I am beginning to realize that I don't really like though is that until (or if ever) you reach $100 in sales, you get nothing (unless you convert your sales money to credits), so you are basically giving away your work until you reach $100.

I used to use istockphoto.com..
I think I still have about 3 pictures there. I decided it was a waste of my time uploading pictures there, having to wait 3+ days to get approved and then having them to be sold at a couple of pennies. If I'm going to waste half a day to upload pictures, I just don't want to sit and wait around for days to see if they managed to get in or not.
I'm just too impatient. I could take new photos instead of uploading to various sites. lol

Hi Linda
Shutterstock don't charge, they are fantastic. I'm really new to putting up stock but I have made $5.40 in 9 days there and I started with 9 photos and added since them, many multi downloads as well.
Plus referal program.
Link to Shutterstock
So if you join using my referal you still get your $0.20c per download and I will get $0.03c for everyone of your downloads as well.
Have a look, their download stats button is almost as addictive as our update button. Oh and about 6 hours to approve your multi downloaded photos is great!
Bob
