It seems a lot of people define 'macro' as a 'semi-blurred shot of a random object found in the kitchen', not caring about quality, composition, impact or artistic appeal.
I think we need to think of a way not to limit the number of entries, but increase the quality of the entries.
Nothing personal against you, just ranting out of disappointment with what i've seen. |
I tend to agree that there are quite a few poor quality entries in this challenge but your response makes no sense to me. The pictures are weak but you give them high scores. Is that fair to the ones that really are good enough to score in the top half of the scale? to have all the lower half pics pushed upwards like that. Please reconsider.

Well I went from a 3.7 on my first challenge. Now on my second challenge I am ever so slowly climbing. 4.8 so far and pleading for a 5 but thats still quite the climb. But only one comment :( wonder whats stopping me from getting my five..? |

They would still get relatively different scores from me. Correct me if i'm wrong but if you sort them by the score, they would still be in the same order as if i was using 1-10 scale. So it's not really important overall. |

I'm at 4.7 with zero comments. Zero! I know it's pointless to complain, but while my shot isn't a 1:1 macro, it is a 1:2 or so - more clearly a macro/closeup than a lot of the shots... no bugs, no flowers. There is focus and exposure is not too bad - I'd give it a 5 for sure! Oh well. |

As both a participant and a voter, I have to say that with the number of entries, I got overwhelmed trying to make a comment on every one of them. The number of comments I've made is about half of what I've voted on. As far as the sliding scale that some are using, though - I'm not sure it's an effective way to judge. I am not a statistician, but I think that if you only rank entries that you feel are above a 5, anyone who deserves a 1 from you will not be getting it, thus their average will be higher than what it should have been and possibly end up higher than entries that truly are middle of the pack.
Does that make sense to all you mathematicians, or am I way off? |

Moswyn, while I am not a mathemetician, going with cardinal numbers, voting on less than 100% will skew the results. Anyone voting on 100% will effectively have their votes normalized and would not skew any results. The only way partial voting really works is with ordianl numbers . Those inherently normalize. |

I feel that a macro could best be desribed as taking a photo of somthing in such a manner that you would get the feeling that you were around an inch tall. Everything around you that was before so insignificant is now dazzling in it intricacy. The hairs on a leaf, the way sand would appear as boulders, or the way an ant has somehow become larger than you.
I just feel a good part of the photo's in this challenge did not fit what I thought a macro was. Am I mistaken on my idea of what a macro is?
As for the low number of comments I have voted on 100% I have commented on 3%. I will ever so slowly and somwhat randomly grab a photo and give it a comment. I doubt I will get through them all but i'll try to get as many as I can....

I submitted mine as a goof. I'm surprised at the current score:
Votes: 159
Views: 204
Avg Vote: 5.4717
because the execution wasn't all that great.

I couldn't agree more. There ARE a few gems among the boring, out-of-focus-poorly-lit subjects however, so my scale is unchanged and the good shots are getting rewarded.

A strict, literal application of this definition would mean that it isn't possible to take digital macros due to the "on film" qualifier. (But I get the point).

With all the watches in this challenge, I thought we'd see at least *ONE* Rolex ;) |

The big spenders around here would rather drop that kind of coinage to support their lens addictions, I'm sure... ;o) |

well, I've just finished voting on them.... and I thought the images were supposed to come up randomly. But I got a hen, then some eggs, then a feather, all in a row. Yep, lots of watches, rings, shells, eyes, and amethysts (of all things).
edit: oh, and fountain pen nibs... forgot those.

I actually liked my Macro shot more than my Calender, however my Calender shot is doing well in my books and the Macro a little, hmmm well not so good. I'm just happy I received my first comment on the Macro and it was very constructive on top of that. Thanks, too bad I can't go back and fix it.. ha ha. I still have over 300 shots to vote on in this challenge, long way to go.
Need more coffee!

Okay, well it's been decided by every commenter (8) that I misused DOF. I think my title killed it. There's no changing my score though (4.0x) because it's been that way since the challenge started. *sighs* Please, no more comments on my image, I know wha's wrong with it. -_-

Well at least you didn't give away which entry is yours. I think that comment about DoF could apply to about half of the photos in this challenge. |

My photo is a one of a kind in the challenge. I'll probably be on the last page when the results are organized by score. Oh well...maybe some day. |

I have only entered two Challenges and have never posted in the forums...so I have a question that I can't find an answer to. You all are quoting the Views, Votes and Average Scores for your photographs in the Macro Challenge...where do I find this information about my entry. It is not in "My Profile"....it contains information about the only completed Challenge I entered which was Bizarre Nature and that information was only posted after the Challenge was completed. Thanks for any help!

On the home page, any image you have in a challenge that's currently being voted on shoudl appear as a thumbnail at upper left. Underneath will be the statistics for the image. Paid members also have an "update button" in this area to update stats at will; otherwise they are updated once an hour, I believe.
