Hey there! I read the license agreement but I still have a question about the possible use of a shuttershock image - or any other stock image for that matter. Can I use a stock image as part of photo montage (like as a background), make a fine art print with the final image, and then sell the print? Thanks for the info :)
11/10/2004 08:36:40 PM · #359
Yes you can.. You just cant make a series of prints that all include photos from ShutterStock..

using 1-2 to create some art is OK

have you refered SO many people??? I have a few on my list but not THAT many..
that means that your refered photographers had 578 downloads togethers... WOW.. that is a lot

I have been going very well the last three days, with a avg. of $5.00 a day on shutterstock, that is what I make on Istock...and I have been on istock for 10 months
11/11/2004 09:07:28 AM · #363
I'm only averaging about $1.40 per week so far, but its still faster than what I have accumulated on Istock, especially considering I've only had things up for about two weeks here and over there its been four or five months.

I think if I get more business oriented photos up, I'll see an increase as well.

One sugestion for shutterStock:

When you refuse some photos for the reason there ar to many on the site like them, they should not count for your rejected photo. I might not know what kind of photos there are on the site and send alot of them (even high quality) and get rejected and thus low ratio acepted/rejected.

I think rejected must be - poor quality, wrong exposure, out of focus.. etc.. but not this one: too many on the site

Am I right?

I have a fairly "normal" DSL connection -- way faster than dialup but not instantaneous. I had an idea for some office-related photos (keyword freq = about 50th) so I did a search for that keyword and spent 5-10 minutes browsing the 15 or so pages of thumbnails which resulted.

I didn't see anything which looked quite like what I had in mind, so I took some pictures at work the next morning, uploaded two of them in the afternoon, had them approved that evening, and two days later have three downloads.

I'm completely new at doing this, but like anything else it seems obvious that you will have greater success if you do a little research and planning first. If you have photos (or ideas for photos) browse for current pictures using the subject/keywords you'd attach to your photo, and assess the extent and quality of the competition.

I think this is the more tedious but surest route to an improved approval ratio and increased download frequency.

P.S. Too bad I can't seem to apply this strategy to my DPC entries : (

I was just curious if anyone had any insight into how many people go on there to buy photos. From their website //www.shuttershock.com it seems the site is more geared toward people signing up to sell their photographs than for people who wander in looking to buy some photos.

Anyone made any money on that site?

See, I posted this in the "wrong" thread : )

I thought I had read through that thread the other night, but I guess I was tired. my apologies.

I often have trouble remembering what thread/site I'm writing in .. : )

I've been "racking up" credits at $1-2/week over the three weeks I've had photos up (28 so far). About 10 photos have been downloaded, but none more than three times.

ShutterStock has only been open to "outside" photographers for about a month, so it's kind of early to expect people to be "making money," yet I've heard rumors there may already be a couple of people who will qualify for a payout. However, I expect the vast majority of us will be lucky enough just to make $1-200/year.

67 rejected (too many autumn and sunsets)
Quality Ratio: 0.96 :(
Total: $6.80 in least then a 2 weeks :)

I have a dumb question... er um... questions...

When saving files for uploading, what level jpeg should they be saved at? (10, 12?) Baseline standard or optimized? And what should you name files? Say I have an image of bolts - should I name it "bolts.jpeg"?

I didn't see any such specs in the FAQs or guidelines but I could have missed them. Anyway, thanks for helping out the newbie!
11/11/2004 07:10:32 PM · #372
File size is "no issue;" I save at the highest JPEG quality setting, with the Baseline option, to ensure maximum compatibility.

I don't think the name matters -- clients never see the filename you use. Try to write an accurate description of the photo as they DO read that.
