Some of you may already know about Bruce Fraser's method for calibrating ACR. While it may not be something you do frequently (you might calibrate for different white balance, ISO settings, and lenses), I've just discovered a useful ACR calibrator script by Thomas Fors. Depending on your machine this script can take a long time (if ACR were better integrated into PS it wouldn't be a problem), but the results are pretty good. Its automatically generated results compare well with my manual results (following Bruce Fraser's article).

Never been able to drum up the enthusiasm to buy a GretagMacbeth ColorChecker. Do you find it makes much difference or this calibration
process helps a lot ?
My cam isn't so great on reds, particularly with the C1 profiles. I've mostly moved to using ACR these days anyway for convenience. |

Indeed, I have found it does make a big difference. I was concerned about ACR's lack of input profile support. Jeff Schewe mentioned in a forum somewhere that you could do it by converting to ProPhotoRGB, then assigning the profile in PS CS, but that didn't make good sense to me. Obviously, his workflow is different now since his Adobe article is a sort of glib version of Bruce Fraser's recommended calibration process.
Bruce Fraser's method, although you end up tweaking a bunch of parameters, only recommends saving the settings from the calibration tab. I've just changed my naming conventions to reflect the white balance so I can grab the best/closest settings for a series of shots.
I'll post samples later. |
