| 06/04/2008 12:02:50 PM | Starry, Starry Night...Paint Your Palette Blue and Grey by hotpastaComment: Nice! Blue and grey indeed. The perspective is interesting. I'm not sure your frame works, though. Assuming you have a wide black bar on top as well, that doesn't hurt, it may in fact add to the vastness, but the bar below is disturbing. A long while I thought it was the shore, and was about to suggest a crop, until I realised that it is far too straight for that. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/04/2008 11:52:35 AM | Going Darkby Kel27Comment: Since this was "advanced editing", you could have taken advantage of that and done a few things (assuming, of course, that you have the software for it). At the very least clone out the power line. Possibly taking a second frame with the background sharp, and merge them. Increase the saturation on the foreground, or better still (as I have a feeling you may have used a camera mounted flash) done a light paint from the side. Like this, I find it difficult to see anything interesting, captivating or pretty in it, sorry. |
| 06/04/2008 11:38:17 AM | Night Time Tagby libertyComment: The sky doesn't offer much drama here, so the silhouettes of the barn and the woods serve a purpose. The light paint takes it from bland to original. It almost gets a "Scary Movie"- like effect. I had a similar idea, before going for Partners instead, so I'll throw in an extra sympathy point... | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 06/01/2008 05:08:16 PM | #1by ralphComment: I don't think the light from straight above really works. A bit further back, to just light up the hair and not the face, or to the front (but further away), to take care of the shadow from the nose. (But I'm not really competent to offer advice, just thinking about what I might have tried...) |
| 06/01/2008 04:58:35 PM | No attention (for the camera)by hajekaComment: I'm on thin ice here, but I would say that this has too much of a snapshot to really work as a portrait. Technically it is quite good (apart from the background), but I would have wanted eye contact with the model. Given that, this could have been really good.
A portrait without eye contact would only work, I think, if it was part of the story told. A picture of someone following some action that I am not aware of or "part of" ends up a snapshot. (I've got a whole bunch of them myself, and none of them is any good...) | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Lighting :(
I hope you get some good advice from people who know their ropes - I'm still in the trial-and-error phase myself, as far as lighting goes, just about able to spot a problem when I see it, but not confident in how to deal with it.
I find your portrait above average as is, but nowhere near its ultimate potential. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
