To me, this is a posed candid. How does the environment define the subject?

The shading around the eyes is not to my liking, but that is subjective. There is a nice capture of concentration and intimidation. The b&w adds depth.

Tighter shot to remove the gate enclosure in the back would have added more to the dark and damp.

I just don't get this, sorry. No reason, just not saying anything to me. Art speaks differently to different people.

This is a wonderful attempt at an environmental portrait. He is aware that you are shooting it. There is enough information from the environment to define the subject, it is authentic. I wish the sun weren't giving you so many shadows of the face, and I would have loved to see everyone in "action" so to speak.

This a a well captured shot of annoyance. But the green background tells me this is a posed shot. There is no environment, there are props, but they don't define the subject, they define the shot. Additionally, the rims of the glasses are cutting off the line of the eyes.

Cutsey shot. Not exactly snap-shot, but sort of candid. She is obviously having a really good time with this and it is a great public service announcement about the wonders of reading. I am just having a difficult time as seeing this as an environmental portrait. Art speaks differently to different people.

I think my biggest problem is that I don't see the environment. The emotion in the face is fantastic, but this challenge was to see the subect in their environment. To communicate how the environment defines the subject and how they interact within that environment. You could remove the mike stand and change the angle of her hand and you have a great shot of grief.
