Push and Pullby mlhannahComment: Greetings from the Critique club
Ok... classic case of missed opportunity. This has so much potential in it and this rock has allot going for it. Dark mood and as the main theme in this image I would have composed - or cropped this slightly different. Not sure that the horizon in the middle helps this. Yes it was a dark and gloomy day but the processing lets it down a bit and I would have used a bit more contrast. I almost want to play with this image myself but this is your interpretation and the way you intended for viewers to judge it, yet it wont draw attention or interest as it stand here and you also are not putting enough emphasis on your main subject when you dont use all possible tools you have. A square crop is perfect for this but with horizon and other elements placed wrong you loose the plot.
On the scene when taking this I would have also dropped the ISO and upped the F stop for a longer exposure.. at least as long as you can get and judging from your notes you could maybe have gotten to almost a second. Trying to smooth out the water creating further contrast with this solid rock and smooth surface.
Enjoy experimenting and hope the notes help in future challenges. |

Michigan Winter Warmth...Sunshine!by DrakeComment: From the Critique club
Good improvising and the warm son contrasted by the cold place does work well. You can almost imagine yourself wanting to stand in this light - but not familiar with this kind of conditions Im sure the sunshine is deceptive as even with this it can be very cold.
Comp looks good and nice lead in to image with enough interest on sides to bring eye back as well as clouds naturally bringing the eye down again.
Notes on processing I suppose is a personal thing and I cant say Im a big fan of this kind of processing where you loose allot of the natural feel of the beautiful setting. I note another comment also not liking the clouds but even lower down the whites in the water is so unnatural that you wonder if it's not some artificial plastic in it. i might have opted for a slightly warmer tone to this as it could help in the theme of the challenge.
Nice finish and many people hope to get a 6 in any challenge. |

Rockport Pheasant Farmby posthumousComment: Happy to give some feedback Don.
A Gursky image no doubt and yet theres more. Sticking to the comp rules here Def helps to keep the image together yet also as mentioned in your note.. the style lends itself to breaking the mold and with focal point lacking and scattering you all over the scene yet contained and ordered with strong lines repeated. Cleverly done. The rythm generated from bottom to top gets broken by a pulse in the line running across the scene - the nets. One dont realise how much effect this has when viewing it.
Exposure good and love the clouds and sky in this as well but with the birds confined to the ground. Im sure the Gursky effect would have been further enhanced if even the sky was scattered with birds.
It's Gursky..and yet you have thrown a different spin on it. Top contenders came in with copying textbook the style. Nice take on the challenge while generating an image which in your mind is Gursky.. yet stayed unique, different.
Works for me

Can only see the thumbnail and the larger view does not even load. Very curious |
