Oh, for sure. In the case of this image, it has a broader appeal...dramatic sky, reflections, HDR toning. In the case of the shot I wanted to submit, it might have struck a chord with someone who's actually seen Avatar (not the crappy movie, but the three seasons of animation heaven). I dunno, I guess I really want another ribbon, then I can be like "pfffft, I'm a multiple ribbon winner, if you don't get my awesome photography skillz, it's because YOU suck". :D

I think the "dull & flat" comment might have been a bit misinterpreted...what I see in this shot (besides one of my favourite subject matters) is a little over-saturation and under-contrast. Perhaps try to bring the sat down -20 or so, and then play with a "curves" layer to bring out some of the depth....
