Skating on the canal is always fun.

In brightly lit situations it's hard to get both the bright and dark areas exposed correctly. For basic editing the options to correct this in post processing are a bit limited. The highlights/shadow tool in photoshop CS helps a lot in these situations.

If the image wasn't for a basic editing challenge then you could take two images (one to expose the bright areas and one to expose the dark areas) then merge them in your editing software.

B/W images can work very well with grain, however, in this case I think the choice of DOF is letting the image down (too shallow).

Love the high key effect on the child and the sense of joy in her expression. The background is a little cluttered though kept at bay slightly by the fence and the choice of dof. Good sense of motion too.

Maybe never used neat image, however all the detail has been processed out of the skin. This is the classic result of too much neat image. You seem to have come up with different processing which produces the same result.
