Serendipity: to search for a needle in a haystackby PatochComment: It took me awhile to find the needle because it isn't in as sharp focus as the straw at the top of the image. When I did it didn't feel like much of a surprise since this was an obviously staged photograph. As a composition this photograph does not work for me. In order for the abstract quality of the straw to be really striking, the whole composition needs to be tightly focused. There is too much blurring in the foreground. |

Honey, how would you like your egg doneby RUEDISCHMUTZComment: While this is a staged moment, it is so well done I can't argue with it. This is because the idea is clever and imaginative and the composition works. My only complaint is I would have liked to have seen the yellow of the yolk more clearly. Perhaps if the composition had been arranged on a lighter background? |

Surprise Cereal Prizeby JesuispeureComment: This is too staged to work as a serendipitous moment. It doesn't work on its own as a good compositon.Perhaps if the cereal box was more prominent and if the cereal was spilling out with the necklace. As it is, it looks like someone has just dumped a necklace out of a rolled up magazine onto a bowl of cereal. |

Unlikely Duoby harveyfrybergerComment: This is not an uncommon sight so I don't see a relation to the theme. The image quality is quite poor--the colors are washed out and the figures of the two boys are unfocused. Because of this, the boys looking on in the background distract from the main subject. The framing is a little off-kilter. This may have worked if the subject was in tighter focus and the background was blurred. |

Afternoon Flightby MakoComment: The photographer captured a nice moment but the washed out colors and lack of focus detract from the impact reducing this to a rather dull snapshot. |

Finder's Keeper'sby tito79_98Comment: Obviously staged so uninteresting as a statement about serendipity. It's not a striking composition. Also, I'm distracted by the other item in the pocket. Is it a can of Skoal? A cookie? Message edited by author 2004-04-28 01:44:12. |

Sure didn't expect that!by NeuferlandComment: It's too bad the image is faded and lacking focus because it might have worked. As it is, there isn't enough surprise in seeing a horse's tongue sticking out to overcome the technical problems. |

Our Eyes Met Across A Crowded...by ccraftComment: This is a nice composition and it represents the theme of serendipity. I like the soft muted purples and greens in the background in contrast to the rough, grey texture of the squirrel's fur and the tree bark. |

Fabricationby beckettbootsComment: The photographer pays attention to their surroundings and it shows. They took advantage of a serendipitous arrangement of letters on a sign to make a funny, new statement. Not an outstanding composition but given the limitations it works on a certain level. |
