This is so Sidwell-esque. I think that's a compliment, too! :) I LOVE the soft focus and the UNBELIEVABLY dreamlike quality here. I'd love to know what the original looked like and how you PP'd it. 10.

Needs some contrast. Try a high pass sharpen.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This shot does not give me a sense of 'where you live.' While I don't think it falls outside of the challenge brief, it's not nailing me over the head with it either. You live on the 11th floor? I like the perspective in this shot, but the flare detracts from the lines/parallels and overall composition. I see lines, edges and then circles disrupting the flow.

I like that this is in b/w. color would be too hard on the eyes looking this way.

Nice finish! Happy shooting!

Border looks to me to be the strike zone. I don't expect non-sports fans to 'get' it. Great image. Wonderful ribbon!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Nice to "meet" you Kali.

What can I say about this shot? It's fantastic. How come you didn't get DQ'd when you submit your info? *shrug* Strange.

Anyways - congrats on the purple ribbon. I don't think there's much to critique here. Maybe the top center of the photo is a tad overexposed? Maybe the real problem is that I didn't take this photo? :)

Good job and continued good luck!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

The focus on this shot could have been a bit better, though I am not familiar with your camera so perhaps it could not have been with your equipment. This was a spectacular find, but if you could have just gotten it a bit sharper, it would have helped tremendously.

I also think I don't see the need for all the negative space at the bottom of this photo. I would have cropped a bit tighter and used the fully 640 height to show the detail in the droplet.

Happy shooting and good luck!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This picture seems a bit overexposed to me. The leaf lacks much detail and the ground scene does seem contrived - a bit outside of the 'serendipity' challenge, perhaps.

I like the intent of your photo and yes, it does mostly take me back to LoTR but in LoTR the ring wasn't found just sitting atop the ground like this. Perhaps if this ring were half buried, sitting in black mud and shining out despite all of that - then the connotation may fully be there.

Happy shooting,

Mav

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Nice to meet you Andrew.

I think one major point was underscored by a comment you received: the background is distracting. You can't always control these things, but if you are able to change your aperture or even the angle you shoot from, sometimes you can dramatically improve your composition just by focusing on the stuff around your main subject. In this case, you took a wonderfully focused shot (don't mind the 'blurry' stuff - your subject is in focus) and just didn't quite get there with the composition or technical quality.

This is an interesting bug - I don't think I'd like to see one like it. lol

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I think two things hurt this image and one thing really really helped it.

First, this image is a FANTASTIC action shot. That is the best thing about it, and the thing you probably saw when you decided to enter it. The spray is great, the action is caught at the exact right moment.

Now, the problem is two-fold. First of all, the serendipity of the shot is missed because we don't know if you went to an event, if this is your friend, etc. This could easily be a "posed" shot (setup shot) as well as something you just walked by and had to take the pic.

Also, the image is a bit small. Size the largest side to 640 pixels and let us see the details in such a great image. Do that and you'd have a 5.5 on this shot.
