2014 Photo a week. #1: Dusk at Allen Harborby PenelopeKComment: The top half is a fairly ordinary photo, but then the painterly bottom half transforms it into something completely different, almost alien. What happens if you take more off the top? Does the balance get better or worse? (I'm asking, I don't have an answer.) |

Week 1by StagoleeComment: Not much shade there. But they're trying. It looks hot. Like it's been hot for awhile. |

The Walkerby dafletchrComment: The first thing I notice is the sunshine, low and raking across the guy. He seems to be on a mission, walking across the beach, to somewhere. We don't know where, because he's walking along the waterline, not in or out. The third thing I notice is the color of the water, which seems an unusual blue for the wintertime ocean, but it's a nice complementary color for the pinkish orange sand. So it works for me. |

An Evening Walkby ElaineComment: A family walk down a well trodden trail in the late afternoon light. The family stands out nicely against the dark trees. The snow, especially the snow that's in the sun, looks a little more grey than I suspect it does in real life. |

Happy New Yearby GermaineComment: I didn't read anything about the technique, but it's an interesting effect. The exposure is basically the same throughout the image, but the left is crisp and clean, and the right gradually moves to a faded nighttime scene, complete with long exposure fuzziness.
The purist in me doesn't like the airplane contrail, but it does add interest to the image, so I think it's a net positive. |

The market isn't in the best neighborhood. It's perfectly safe during the daytime when the market is open, but I'm sure they lock it up tight when the market is closed at night. |
