Rusted Beautyby edmundtansoComment: Greetings from the Critique Club:
This image was one of my favorites in the challenge. It certainly meets the challenge definition and is quite original and interesting. I particularly liked the textures and the way they help to draw the eye up and around the curve. The compostion is nice and the softer focus at the edges does not distract from the stronger inner surface of the curve. The DOF throwing the background out of focus all together supports this as well. The way you have used the light to support the motion up and around the textured curve gives the image a nice depth and a lasting quality. Thanks for the image. |

This image is a sort of collage of shapes and during the voting my reaction was that it is too busy, there is just too much going on. As far as meeting the challenge, then, it is hard to make a fit when the direction was to make the shape the primary subject of the image. It is also hard to feel that the kid is enjoying this experience with the downturned mouth and half-closed eyes. My suggestion would be use either the silliy glasses/nose orthe magnifying glass and keep the subject simpler. The image could use some overall sharpening and brightening as well. It's a fun idea and the fact that you and your son were playing around together could make a powerful and lasting image with some attention to the emotion you wish to present. |

Round as the moonby WildpurpleComment: Greetings from the Critique Club: This image certainly meets the challenge as closely as one could - the shape is the focal point of the image. That being said, there are a couple of issues which stand out for me. The fringing around the edge and the slight blur. I believe the blur is due to the magnification and certainly there is clarity and great detail around the craters and at the edge of darkness. The fringing might have been addressed (since the editing rules have been relaxed) by desaturating. One further question for me is the tightness of the crop - I am sure you put a lot of thought into this crop but I wonder what it would have been like to give the moon a little more space in which to hang. Thanks for the image, it is a wonderful moon shot and as such deserves to be recognized. |

Teenage Fireflyby ImagineerComment: Greetings from the Critique Club:
This image has an almost Disney quality with the "fireflies" and the strong trunks leaning toward each other. One can almost hear them speaking. The wave effect of the top of the light streaks is very nice. When I first looked at this image I found it a bit busy and I wonder if you thought of the smallest imaginable crop at the bottom to take away a third or half of the puddle of blue but not enough to lose any of the right hand trunk. I also wonder if you might want to rethink how much of the sky you want in this...it might tighten up and have even more punch with a top crop as well as one at the bottom. This is a very interesting image and one which you could play with for a long time I think, it all comes down to what you wish to present. What you gave to the challenge was very fine, thanks. |
