Yeah I took this photo before I learned all that, besides in the original photo you can see that the hand is attached to me. Only in the crop does it lose it's connection. But I still stand by what I say. |

Blanche by kiwinessComment: Not that you aren't a wonderful photographer but I'm absolutely amazed that this finished as well as it did. Generally Free Studies that are in the top 3 have a huge wow factor and I just don't see it here. The black and white is has some nice tones but I'm still wondering how this got on top. On that same note everything I have ever learned about being a better photographer teaches me never to just have a hand pop up out of nowhere. It actually doesn't even look like her hand or it's too big for her body. I know it is because it would be silly to use a fake hand there but I'm just confused, off to read comments left by others. |

Uneditedby EmerkazaComment: To get those bright areas away you can use a ND filter, or multiple ND filters. You could wait until later in the day, if you wait until civil twilight you might get some nice moon light on the area. You could adjust your exposure comp to somewhere around -2 or less to remove the blown hightlights but in reality you want to have your histogram more towards the whites than the blacks. If you over expose the shot your more likely to edit it and bring them back/change the color vs under exposing it and losing all those pixels. I love the water shot but try shooting later in the day first.
One thing that was told to me was shoot the same thing from around the same general area 24 different times of the day. Doesn't need to me all on the same day but experiment with time of day, weather, tide, and so on. You will get a different shot each time.
Good luck, sorry I didn't post in the thread, I didn't read it all nor did I see other suggestions so excuse me if you have already found an anwser. Good luck |

Australian Warriorby JudiComment: Well his hair is grungy for sure and it looks like he hasn't had a shower in sometime now. I love the idea that this story could go many different ways. These guys look pretty scary and I'm wondering if you were held captive against your will and looking to sacrifice your body or toss you into a fiery volcano to calm the gods.
On the other side of things, I've never really liked the flash on subject at night look just because the it never lights the entire image. But on the same note you didn't blow out any highlights with the flash so the amount of flash used to illuminate the subject is spot on. It also looks like you might have over sharpened this image too much, I guess to give it a more grungy look. Over all I give this shot a 7. |
