Critique Club critique:

Composition/Content: Very nice framing of the figurine and nice choice of subject. Nice use of white against black for a simple but striking image.
Lighting: The flash accentuates the contrast and maybe too much. Flash sometimes "flattens" out an image. I think reflected light or side light would have given this figure more depth and because of that more life. I would have still made it high contrast just different angle on the light.
Background: The upper corners are slightly distracting because they are the only things in the background that aren't black.
Camera Work/Technical: Excellent camera angle.
Digital Processing: I've seen some of my images have the gradients like the upper corners here, and they were caused by over processing the color levels and/or saturation. I don't know if that's what caused your gradients or not.
My Opinion: I like the image and think it is well done. I don't think upper corners were the reason for an average score. The image is striking but could use more depth with different lighting to make it more three dimensional.

Midnight Blue

Composition/Content: Very nice composition with the light areas surrounding the island of trees. I'd like to have seen the tops of the trees, but it's a great image. I kind of agree that it doesn't look like night. The light doesn't have a "midnight" or moonlight quality to it, probably because the sky is too light for midnight. The shadows and blue give it a quiet night-time feeling.
Background:I don't know if it was the camera or post processing but there appears to be a band of blue noise in some transition areas like at the top of the distant treeline.
Camera Work/Technical: The blue filter gives the image a soft focus because of the interpolation the camera has to do with only one color. I think it adds to the mood of the image.
Digital Processing: Processing seems fine. Good contrast.
My Opinion: I gave this image a high score because I like the image as a whole. I think it would have scored better with another "blue" title that didn't have midnight in it and possibly if the tops of the trees showed to give it even more of an island look. Great shot.

excellent composition. love the clouds creating their own plane in the sky. the sun looks like a six pointed star, don't know if you used a filter but i like it. the frame adds to this image.
