| 02/01/2003 07:58:20 PM | Ironic Intersectionby Ricky CleaveComment: Critique Club critique:
Composition/Content: Great observation of this contradiction. I wonder what the rest of the intersection looks like and whether including it would improve the image. I think the image would look better without the border.
Lighting: The image is a little dark.
Camera Work/Technical: I like the angle you took the image from. The focus is good but the exposure could be a little longer.
Digital Processing: I copied the image to see if adjusting the histogram would help the brightness and it did. I also did a little color adjustment to bring out the green and it also helped the image.
My Opinion: I think you found a great subject that fits the challenge well. A little post processing would have made it a much more attractive image with brightness and color. Backing off or not cropping quite so tightly would also have improved the image. Nice job.

Composition/Content: The angle is very creative and adds interest to the image. It's easy to see what you wanted the image to convey, but it is hard to read the sign. I don't know whether or not I would know what it said if it weren't for the title of the image. My eye sees the beginning letters of the sign, and naturally travel along the letters as I read the word, and travel beyond to the bus. The center of attention seems to be right where you might step if you stepped off of the curb on the right. This is a great composition with many elements put together to create the whole.
Lighting: The lighting is dramatic with the wet pavement and reflections. The reflections are what help and hinder the image, making the sign difficult to read. I wonder if you would be able to read the sign if you took the exact image with a slave flash above the sign pointing down to illuminate the painted letters from above, leaving the rest of the image exactly the same.
Background: Background is good with the headlights pointed at the camera.
Camera Work/Technical: Good exposure. I wonder if you raised the camera a little higher off of the street surface and still kept the bus in the same position, whether or not the sign would be legible.
My Opinion: Very creative angle and composition. There is more to the image than appears at first.

| 01/30/2003 09:07:34 PM | Say...Cheese!by GeneralEComment: Critique Club critique:
Composition/Content: Great subject and a very creative way to "Say Cheese". I would like to have seen the cheese trimmed so it is not hanging and possibly shaped more like a smile, since this is the result you want when you ask someone to say cheese. The crop and framing is good.
Lighting: The lighting is a little unbalanced, with the warm natural light from the left and the cooler flash prominent on the right side of the face. The flash also shows some difficult shadows on the chin. I would like to have seen either a bounced flash, to make it softer, with a possibly a white reflector to fill in shadows, or, two natural light sources about 45 degrees on either side and in front of the subject. Either way, the lighting would be more even with softer shadows and the color would be more balanced.
Background: The background is not an issue and the shirt looks fine to me.
Camera Work/Technical: Good focus and exposure. I might have shot the picture with the camera a little higher than it is and pointing down a little to avoid the up-the-nose look.
Digital Processing: If you did any post processing it looks good because it's not overdone.
My Opinion: I think you have a great idea that could have been a great picture with a few adjustments as mentioned above. |

Composition/Content: Good effect tilting the camera. I think the picture would look more natural if you put the cookies on a small plate or something. Good subject.
Lighting: The lighting could be a little stronger to lighten up the image, athough you did a good job of quieting any harsh shadows. With an F2.8 aperature and a 1/30 shutter, the only way to lighten the image is with a stronger light.
Background: The image would look better if you had put the glass and cookies on a piece of posterboard that was curved from the bottom then up the back of the picture to produce no seams.
Camera Work/Technical: You did a good job capturing the pouring milk in the glass. Good focus.
Digital Processing: A little sharpening might have helped the image. I would like to have seen what "Neat Image" would have done to this shot.
My Opinion: Two things, more light and seamless background would have made a big difference in this image. I like the idea and angle. Great subject, cookies and milk.

Composition/Content: Very creative and elegant image. The flower stamen is framed beautifully. The soft white on white was a great choice. The positioning and framing of the flower make the shot.
Lighting: The lighting creates depth in the image. Good choice in backlighting.
Camera Work/Technical: Good focus, nice macro, and good depth of field.
Digital Processing: Most people in this crowd like sharp images, but this one is better soft, because all of the parts of the flower are soft and the color and lighting are soft. If you did any processing is was well done because it is not overdone.
My Opinion: Nice treatment of what proved to be a difficult challenge. I like the creativity and execution of the shot. Great job.
