Shoe Paparazzi
by Osihii

Comment:
subject is uninspiring; glittery slippers placed on some bird-poop stained fencing!?! And the focus is far too narrow, and misses the shoes, settling on what seems to be the hotspot at the toe in the front. Maybe considering the 'glam' look of the shoe they should have a 'glam' setting and context?

Comment:
The dog is dominating this picture, and relegates the boots to the back-seat. Makes more a cute pet pic than an image about shoes. I know I'm probably asking the impossible here, considering the subject, but maybe placing him either behind or in front of the boots and using a short focal range focusing on the boots would suit the theme more strongly.

Dancing the Night Away....

Comment:
The composition, just like the metaphors, has been pushed to breaking point I fear. There's too much trying to be said all at once, and the cheekiness and wit would be stronger with at least 2 elements removed from the shot. Less is more.

Magritte Shoes

Comment:
It's a nice idea, but it just seems a little like the effect's being used for the sake of using that effect. The underlying shot seems very busy, take the carpet pattern for one. And the cropping seems uncomfortable, with the edges of the shoes on either side sliced off for no obvious reason. If the camera had moved right in to the boots on the right the image would have been a lot more effective. The strange cut-away on the boots and the toes peeking out by themselves are more than enough to stand by themselves and make a strong image.

I saw a couple of these in the competition so far, and not being american had to do a bit of googling to discover the meaning. A charming subject now I understand, but a shame the shoes themselves aren't the focus of the shot. Maybe taking the shot from a different position would remove the overexposure caused by the sky on the right. The composition could be a bit better also. Take the 'negative space' around the shoes. Some have plenty of space around them while the pair bottom right are jammed uncomfortably into the corner.

Big Day

Big Day

Comment:
The depth of field is very tight in this shot, and focuses on the strap on the left shoe, and a little on the heel. It would be easier on the eye to bring the whole of the shoes into focus. The edge of the table in the background cutting awkwardly through the shot makes the composition uneasy, and could be resolved with a higher angle, or placing a large card behind the shoes or something.

The composition has good potential, but would make a little more sense if the camera was a little higher. It kind of gives the impression of the viewer having just been run over by the biker in the shot as it is now. Seeing the sole of someones shoe gives the psychological image of being trampled underfoot, you get me? And maybe the depth of field could have pulled the viewers focus down to the boot rather than the petrol tank in the centre. Look at the writing on the boot and tank to see what I mean. And a tiny point lastly, but would a battered 10 year old scruffy pair of boots fitted the title a bit more?

A Boot's Eye View....

Comment:
Horizon is tilted which is a bit annoying, and with this title, you should have brought that bird into focus to fit the idea I think. Composition could be improved with the scruby shoreline in shadow to the left moved out of the shot.

At the End of the day

The DOF is so powerful here picking out the zip at the heel that I don't know why you tried to force the "end of day" idea. This way, without the title you have a bit more trouble figuring what's going on in the picture. A protrait shot standing up would have been better I think instead. Tilt your head to the right and see.

Good detail, nice textures, sharp focus, good composition. Only problem is if you didn't know scholl was a brand of footwear the meaning of the picture is completely lost.
