I think the lightin at the time of the photo was working against you. There are a couple of hot spots on the tree. Maybe some warmer lighting and a little less DOF would allow us to focus on the texture of the tree a little more.

My first thought when seeing this image with the title in mind, was that I thought it strange that your main subject is the darkest part of the photo and the buildings are approaching over-exposure. JMO.

My first reaction was the focus was a bit soft. The lighting also looks a bit flat, IMHO.

Interesting ... It feels to me that the sharpening was ovedone. The end result, IMO, is just too harsh.
