green color is oversaturated and strange blue cast/shadows around eye and mouth.

Patriotism this Decade – A Trend Rekindled

Although I feel I see too many American flags in challenges (no disrespect), that at the same time confirms patriotism is a trend. I think your picture is exceptionally well done. The composition, the fine detail, the placement of the ribbon, the low light, the shadows, depth of field. Can't think of anything to improve. 10 points from me.

O.K. I will try to offers some advice and explain why I did not rate this picture high. First of all the fit to the challenge theme : it does not really express roundness to me, although the flower is round. People already commented on the crop you did which removed some roundness. Second, I am sensitive in my voting for originality and quality. A different angle, an original twitch, something which creates a smile, or just sheer beauty. And that is very difficult with a flower shot because there are so many of them around. Yours is o.k. but the flower is bang in the middle, straight from the top and does not get additional points from me because of that. Try to catch peoples attention, by sheer beauty, by originality, by humor, by raising a question. Base condition is a good fit to the theme. And ensure it is also technically a good photograph by choosing the composition, light, focus etc so it supports the message you want to get across. hope this helps. Willem

The angle of view is a bit confusing, but I like the image. Good idea, good execution.

I had a look after I saw your comment on my subway (round challenge) picture. Yours is very different but very cool, no wonder it was a winner as well. I like the atmosphere created by the hue shift, as well as the flow through the picture. Good one.

Wow, thanks all for voting my picture to first place. Really feel great about it. Thanks. When I entered I was wondering whether it would fit the theme, but with some open interpretation I thought it did. (Are the lower scores received an indication of some different opinions about this ? I would love to know the reasons.)

A lot of you wondered what it is or how I did it, well here it is :

It is the view through the front window of the new Copenhagen metro/subway/underground. The metro has been opened only October last year and is very modern and smooth and also unmanned, no driver, so has large accessible windows in the front and back.

I put my camera on a tripod, but used it as monopod, so the legs not folded out. Then I held the camera against the glass, supported by the monopod at an angle, and used the rubber lenshood folded against the glass to shield out any reflections from the interior.

I tried different apertures and exposure times at different speeds of the train and this one turned out the best. It is a 1 second exposure at F2.1 which gives this nice yellow color. Most of the other pictures turned out much more brown because of less exposure, and also less abstract, with the individual lights still visible.

Because of the high speed of the train in the bend and the smoothness of the ride, the picture turned out smooth as well, there was hardly any side movement at this part of the track.

The picture was slightly cropped, to make the round tunnel a bit better visible, small S curve applied, slightly sharpened and then saved for web. No other manipulation.

Thanks again,

Willem Dijkstra

You really put some effort in this setup, with a nice arrangement of colors and it fits the theme. Unfortunately it is just not sharp, only the marshmallows at the back are sharp.

The best advise I ever got on one of my pictures was to use my imagination next time. I would like to give the same advice to you, you can still use the cookies but don't take just a straight flash shot with the cookies right in the middle and lots of uninteresting space around it. Try something different. Hope this triggers you as it did me (although the remark initially might irritate)

Like your setup with the rigns and background. Could have done with just a little more sharpness on the rings.
