Comment:
An interesting, but unnatural-looking shot. The constrast between the surreal sharpness of the grains and the blur of the face bothers me.

Interesting colors, and a very disturbing grin. Sand flecks seem slightly out of focus, though the hair is sharp, making me wonder if the aperture was set very wide.

Cleaning the wheat from husks

Cleaning the wheat from husks1st Place

Comment:
Beautiful, from the background to the colors of the dress to the model herself. The expression is nice, and the motion of the wheat draws the eye. The lighting is flawless. The image evokes a sense of wonder at an archaic technique, even if the metallic winnowing basket makes me think the shot was staged.

Very inventive, and the title makes me laugh.

Manhole

Manhole

Comment:
Without something to give it some context, I have a hard time seeing this as a manhole. My mind wants to perceive it as something about 2 inches in diameter at the edge of some hotel carpeting.

Those are some fascinating-looking claw colors, and the expression is interesting.

Tree and Lights in Fog (2)

Tree and Lights in Fog (2)

Comment:
The problem was that this shot was taken off of the side of the road in a steep, wet ditch, which was practically the only good spot for it that didn't place me potentially smack dab in the path of an oncoming truck. This was the longest exposure time that I could take handheld (let's hear it for image stabilization!). Thanks for the comment, though.

The top detail remains visible on my own monitor, which is itself still a touch dark when checking it against the white-to-blackscale, but it's good to keep in mind that a lot of people will probably have the same problem you do.
Small Castle

Small Castle

Comment:
The sudden context shift here draws the eye and gets a smile from me. I wish that the entire castle was sharply in focus (the eye being drawn solely by color), or that the scene was set so that the apple was at a golden point, rather than in the far corner, and the depth of field set much *narrower*, so that the castle was more heavily blurred.

What, get a blurry shot? That doesn't look remotely like a macro lens to me. Although that thought keeps sticking in my head, the image is sharp, the background texture interesting, and the setup vaguely amusing.

But I can't get over the fact that it doesn't look remotely like a macro lens, and the dark shade in front makes it look like the photographer in the picture has even forgotten to take the lens cap off.

An interesting take on the competition scores you bonus points from me, and just *barely* manages to stay within what I consider the topic limits. The image is sharp, and the colors are nice. The scene evokes a vague sense of peaceful wonder at the beginning of new growth.
