Yellow Cornerby gsalComment: There's a kind of rough industrial ugliness to this photo that makse this seem like a really good place to avoid. The way the shadow defines the space and the way it echoes the railing simply makes the photo. Very nicely observed. |

Golden Roadby JayWalkComment: I like this for its manifold strangeness. Even the yellow is strange, being more green or chartreuse. The very emptiness that makes it attractive, though, seems to make it grow stale pretty quickly. |

4 More Days!by BlownAwayComment: It's a pretty smile and the lighting is good. Not quite sure I get the yellow part... Is it something to do with the braces? |

Homeby emmylouComment: The 'bubble in the woods' idea strikes me as being fresh and novel. I like the general look of it, and there are lots of compositional choices I like. The field and house in the background to the left I find just too distracting. |

Atmospheric Refractionby BanksonComment: DPC is certainly the place to look sharp. Anyone who has been here very long understands that an image has to be sharp sharp sharp not to get trashed in the scoring. I don't know what editing techniques were actually used here, but I have the impression that there was quite a bit of sharpening. My impression is that this is the first time I have seen a picture of oversharpened clouds. It grabs my attention but it looks far too unnatural. As part of a workflow that would end in some paint effect, perhaps this level of sharpening might be a good idea. Finally, I think ignoring the rule of thirds on the horizontal axis hurt the photo a bit. |

Lantau Sunby seed04Comment: Cropped to the rule of thirds and with some other basic editing, this could be an interesting shot. |

Whiskey Glassby MartinKempComment: Quite novel. I find the refracted patterns so interesting that I wish the newsprint had been blank. I imagine there might be other treatments of the basic arrangement that would make the printed page add to the conposition, but I think those might involve eyeglass frames, leather book bindings, and ( not sure how to do it ) even a bit of amber fluid at the bottom of the glass. |

Total Internal Reflection in Air due to Refraction causes MIRAGE!by doctabrezComment: It's an almost invisible mirage.
There is something about the almost total emptiness of this photo that just about makes it interesting. I wonder if it would be more impactful with the saturation of the grass turned down. (And once again I wish basic editing rules let us clone out distracting spots.... ) |
