Roman Emperor (with cold) (#0068)by GautiComment: Very Funny! If I took this shot and had a lot of time to kill, I'd consider trying to isolate the foreground from the background using photoshop. Not sure what to try, maybe make a layer with a steep 'Curves' and select light pixels ( background ) . Then try blurring and/or lightening the background so the emperor is a little more clearly distinguished from his domain. Clever shot. |

Flowing Riverby Zap228Comment: Wouldn't it be nice to know where this was taken? Or how. Normally, the long exposures required for this kind of shot require long exposure times, difficult to do under normal lighting conditions. One also wonders whether this would be better presented as a black and white photo. In any case, the soft, flow lines of the water look good on the sharply focussed rocks. Nice. |

Road around Mývatn Wastelandby russiComment: The sky is drammatic. The hill is ordinary. And the photo does not bear up under scrutiny; it becomes two photos. Perhaps it would be better if most of the land were cropped a bit below the ridge. I would darken the foreground which is in shadow and brighten/saturate the hill in a kind of mirrored effect to what you did the sky. Then we would see the drama of the sunlit hill more as you and your friend did. Just an idea. |

"Dune"by birdyblueComment: I think you were lucky to have taken the shot in slightly diffuse light, otherwise the shot would be without the rich mid-tones that make it an exceptional sea-side shot. I find the sand more interesting than the sky, so I think the photo could be improved by moving the horizon upward, but there is an essential balance struck between the azure sky and the tawny beach sand that ought not be compromised; reframing risks this. Nice. And congrats! |

by timmiComment: I find myself applying photoshop filters to shots that had visual flaws - camera motion or blurryness - and I wonder what this shot would have been without effects. I also wonder what effect you used. Regardless of these questions, the shot is compelling. Nice work. |

by timmiComment: I suppose it is our most recently learned secrets we hold most dearly; so tell nobody - golden autumn leaves will frequently photograph best on overcast days. Very nice shot. |

New Dayby pitsamanComment: One must rise early to get the shot. This one was worth it! Great work. |

Storm.jpgby FibonacciComment: Oh, the joys of the "Saturation / Hue" adjustment control; how would we make drammatic photos without it? Seriously, so often it is the color of the subject that gets our attention in the first place, but the camera or film does not quite report what we 'see.' Though the clouds are impossibly steely blue and the grass impossibly chartreuse, it is precisely this juxtaposition of warm and cold that makes the photo. Nice. |

Out thereby heidaComment: Sends shivers down the spine. The dark, hovering clouds, the plumes from the geothermal springs, the bleak and barren hills - this is quintessential "Iceland." Where is this hardy Icelander headed, one wonders. |

Belmont Mistby martinho_tristeComment: It's very moody. With the fog obscuring any other elements, the photo emphasizes the interesting shape of the tree. Nice.
P.S. Is this a natural color - i.e. light cast by nearby fluoresent lamps - or is it created by editing? Message edited by author 2005-02-14 09:12:02. |
