Oil and Water Naturaly Separates

Oil and Water Naturaly Separates

The idea of separation of fluids and of shadow and substance is a good one, however these two, in this composition, compete for attention. The shadow would have been more effective at a severe angle to and some distance from the substance it resembles. By placing them so close, they distract from each other and leave me dissatisfied with the result.

Separation of Church and State Street

Separation of Church and State Street

Comment:
Two dimensionally the sign is plastered right over the church. It does not imply separation, but rather dominance of the state over the church. A good theme separation of the two, but this composition does not say that to me. Some separation between the two in two dimensions would have spoken more to me about separation. Also when two objects share the "lime light" so to speak they should opppose each other somehow in the frame, these vie for the same spot and attention and it gets in the way of a good photo.

To me this seems a nice picture for a family album and would hold a cherished spot there. However here in a photographic challenge the family album type picture is up for public viewing and by posting it there invites public praise, indifference or apathy. The flash detracts from the picture and gives the face unnatural colors, harsh ones that belie the soft skin of a child. It appears that someone pulling the child out of the fram which feels a bit artificial, if you intended to show force depriving the child of her toys then I feel it should have been a bit bolder show of that force. I like the thought of a child separated from its treasure trove without seeing ruination and despair in the child. Perhaps the idea needs a bit more polishing but it does hold to the theme. Hope this was not too harsh, just meant for it to be constructive.

Well done, well lit office in the back highlighting just the right items to convey a florist yet the focus never wanders away from the model. Nice pose and costume to bring this to life. Hits a 10 for me.
