Looking in the eye of desolationby tkalectComment: Minimalist certainly though it doesn't say desolate to me. I just think "nice plastering job!". There just isn't anything in this image to grab my interest at all.

Desolated Regionby brentpaughComment: Too much light reflection and not visually appealing to look at.
I can see that this was an attempt at a humourous entry but it just doesn't work on any level for me.

Catching the last busby kostiaComment: My feeling about this image is that you may have concentrated so hard on showing a desolate scene that you have overlooked the importance of presenting an image that works in it's own right. Although the abandoned bus ticket is the focal point and presumably the subject the thing that stands out most to me is the unattractive metal gate/ shelter/ signpost at the left of the frame. I feel it makes the composition weak. I wonder if it might be stronger if the image contains the same bus ticket (or other litter) on it's own on the paving? The texture, dirt and strong lines of the paving have some interest and might give more focus to the ticket?

Shadow and Linesby cimarron98Comment: Thank you for your PM response to my questions about your thoughts behind this. It's always interesting to me to hear the thought processes behind people's images. I think if this were being presented solely as a peice of art in a modern art gallery that it would be well received. In those situations the theme or thought process is often seen merely as a starting point for inspiring the artist's creativity. My feeling is that this particular environment is a little different because it involves creating an image based on a theme where that theme can be discerned by the viewers in the final image. On that level I just don't feel, personally, that this image succeeds. I do think it succeeds on other levels - I like the design itself, the light and shadow and geometric style. I look forward to seeing more work from you in the future. |

Evening desolationby tignaComment: This says \"seedy\" to me, not desolate though I can follow the thought process that arrives at this as an image of loneliness.
Is the blue colour cast meant to reflect the blue (X rated) nature?
Regardless of content the image just doesn't work for me.

"A Perfect Thanksgiving Dinner"by autoolComment: I can see that this seems to be an abandoned house but am not sure about why this particular scene has been selected other than that sweet kid's paining left behind.
I think a different viewpoint may have resulted in an image which was stronger overall.

Final Destinationby SmeagolComment: I thought a lot about what this might mean. I thought maybe the idea was a lone spaceman floating in space, either dead or alive. So I figured it probably fit the challenge OK. I just don't like this posterized treatment at all. It's not badly done but it's just not my taste at all.

Alone Againby patriciabrown2001Comment: I can see the idea behind this but I personally don't think it's been pulled off as well as it could have been.
I find the background very distracting.
I don't like the strong orange tone.
The decision on which parts of her arms/ legs/ hands are included and which aren't seems a little abitrary.
The image seems unsharp.
That said the idea itself is a nice one.

My ill dogby TellopazzoComment: I'm sure he's feeling poorly but the image just looks like a dog lazing about as dogs do and just doesn't say challenge topic at all to me.
