The Photographerby MelethiaComment: I do love photographs of photographs: it's such a circular argument, and it gets more absorbing with each turn. This one is improbably perfect. Best I can say of it is that it's exactly the kind of wonder-of-photography gesture that Brian himself would make. For a student of photography - I mean student in the sense of lifelong, never-sated disciple - seeing this photograph is the same as when a devoted birdwatcher sees a fabulously rare species for the first time: a moment of quiet rapture. A moment for a big breath, and a murmured "Oh, yes!" Thank you. |

Dorothyby odriewComment: Best of the pictures that might actually have been taken by odriew. And it's a terrific photograph, with our without him. 9. Thank you.

Bathing, beautyby MelethiaComment: This is an uncommonly good and uncommonly interesting photograph for DPC.
By that I mean that nearly everyone here is an admirer of unequivocal photography, and wants to produce nothing more ΓΆ€“ and certainly nothing less ΓΆ€“ than that themselves: The kind of stuff that really impresses the family and friends.
But not so many are brave enough, nor curious enough, to produce the slightly discordant stuff that sows doubt and confusion, including in themselves. Photographs like this fabulously insurrectionist picture, that resists immediate resolution and ferments restlessness of the imagination.
It's a world-class photograph. Your score is therefore 10.95 and your burden is this Order of the Thumb. Thank you.

Mrs Durphin and the Balloonby rooumComment: Lovely restraint in this photograph. Well composed and beautifully rendered from a graphic point of view. Alas it's also cute enough to score really well, but hopefully it's going to be appreciated for more than that, because it certainly has more to offer. A 7+ pick for me. Thank you. |

the journeyby tnunComment: Always love the transformative effect of the decisive crop. It brings home the point that a really good photograph has life and meaning outside the frame. If everything was inside the frame, this photograph would be less; surely even the dullest imagination can grasp that here? It's a clear 7+ pick for me. Thank you. |

like fish in a barrel by jmritzComment: There's only one DPC member with the ability to consistently make poetry from the scraps that others throw away, so if you aren't John M then you are a disgraceful pretender and you may as well cease immediately because you'll never last the course. It's a one man race I'm afraid. It's an automatic 7+ pick for me. Thank you. |

A weary manby markwileyComment: An uncomplicated idea beautifully realised. The juxtaposition of that perfectly stilled human life with the blurred window scene is first among the several things I admire about this photograph. And that's the second: the photograph ... in spite of the striking pathos of the subject matter, the picture isn't really about him, it's about the photograph itself as a thing. We're invited to reflect on what a photograph is, rather than simply what this man is. Well, I am so invited, and I hope a few others will be too. Into my 7+ picks, and thank you. |

Oh la moustacheby jagarComment: Just like you, I love the preposterous street moments when ordinary people momentarily wear a silly costume. Great chorus line in support makes this one all the more fun. I think we all do these absurd things in public and never know it, because they're only one heartbeat; the observer's eye can't see them unless it's connected to a camera. Into my 7+ selections. Thank you. |

spacesby bvyComment: Very interesting photograph of a nightmare. Or possibly it's a time machine. In my 7+ picks, and thank you for offering something different. |
