It's a silly-serious portrait, which is one of my favourite things. But it's a healthy cut above other silly-serious portraits for a few reasons.

First is the deadpan expression ... not a simulated deadpan, a real one. First-and-a-half is the distortion to the features caused by the goggles, and the fact that he is apparently oblivious or indifferent to it. Second is the orientation in landscape, which complements his splendidly landscaped ears. Third is the beautiful craftsmanship evident in the technical quality of the photograph. And last but best of all is the fact that it is a joyful photograph, but without any explicit joy being visible. You have here the implicit joy of two things: Photography, and Family (I am assuming the family part, but it's really gotta be I reckon).

This is what photographs and photography are really about. 10, and a heartfelt Order of the Thumb. Thank you.

Oh! I rarely look at challenges I haven't entered/voted. So when something good happens I often miss it. This is something good! It's a very fine picture indeed. I'd have given you a big score and a gushing comment, Robert. It's such an unusual, clever photograph, and quite beautiful. Other-worldly, in a quiet way. A great thing to remember this special moment by. Thank you.

Haha! You got me! I was waiting for the picture to finish loading, to finish resolving itself, and realized that I'd be waiting a long time. It's Art Nouveau, but as seen by Joyce's Stephen Dedalus after a few nice Guinnesses.

It's a really nice shot, if a wee bit enthusiastically Nik'd. But I have also found the very same extreme 'Nikking' hard to resist in my own stuff. I'm just now learning to back it off a notch or two, for greater durability at the cost of a quieter initial impact.

Giles you take some really thoughtful and original pictures. I know you have said you're unconvinced about some of the weirdness that a few folks celebrate here at DPC, but I reckon that you are yourself one of those weird folks. You just haven't fully realised it yet. Alas, when you do catch it properly, I'm afraid there is no cure.
