He-he. Cute. This would go over a little better I think if the background was a truer white. Has a blue cast to it currently (which easily happens with poster board or other white background materials inside). Using custom white balance on your camera can help some also. Anyway, good luck in the challenge.

Interesting ratio you've used here. Was it to eliminate another bird or did you just happen to like this layout? Not that it matters, just curious. You have pretty good details in the seagull overall. Seems maybe just a tad dark, although that could be because of the dark wings making it seem that way. I like the angle the wings form in your choice of composition, and the title is cute. Good luck in the challenge.

Nice DOF, and a simple photo that by itself is ok. For the challenge I think you missed the point a little. "...photograph something that defined the year you were born." Was granite etching symbolic of 1959? Hmmm... Good luck in the challenge.
