Grainy B&Wby JHComment: This is actually pretty cool. I like the angle of the rabbit ears and the overall composition. One thing I noticed that I'm not sure about is that there seems to be quite a bit of glare on the screen and a few parts of the TV surface. I am not sure if this was intended, but perhaps could have been avoided by diffusing the light source yet more or bouncing it in where the glare would have been reduced. It seems a pretty minor nitpick.
I like how you worked to keep the lighting in somewhat unnatural straight lines on the floor. Great depth too! |

Velvet Rhapsodyby elee3009Comment: Very, Very, Very nice.
I actually like the deep DOF on this one, I feel that the leaves are able to add a little something out of the ordinary as well as the other objects in the back. Very nicely done. I think you do a great job with that 'style' of effective background objects to lens a mood. Others keep commenting that they don't like it, but I think the only thing that does is affect the votes slightly. Photographically, it's very nice IMHO.
The only real thing I don't like is the pink fringing that has shown up in places. It's a bit odd and I'm not sure the source. You might use a selective color to shift it every so slightly towards the red scale.
Incidentally, you will notice that your rose is centered on the inner left fifth rather than a third. Works beautifully.
This also proves that you indeed CAN cut off some of the edges of some subjects and retain excellent quality.
PS. HUGE improvement over the yellow rose.

Stories of Her Life by librodoComment: This was my pick for the blue. Nice to see a pic get over 8 again. And a quite healthy 8+.
This picture stopped me in my tracks and I ended up just staring at it for about 5 minutes. Seeing it in the larger format just added a little bit.
Interestingly, I just met someone from Iloilo two days ago. First time I have met someone from that part of the Philippines. |

The essence of an annoyance by PhilComment: Dude. Totally awesome. I did not know there was such a picture in the challenge, but I took some shots posted in this thread probably within a few days of your pic. I like yours a bit better for the BG and color treatment though.
Nice.
I will probably post more details and setup shots later on to maintain that a bit when I get time for those who are interested. |

Red is the colourby BethraComment: This is kinda nice, particularly because of the B&W waterfall, but I can't help but think that it might have been better if you had been a bit closer to the action and shot a bit wider angle to get your friend in more detail and add more depth to the shot. The hair seems a bit grainy and poorly defined... Seems like it was edited a bit? I don't know.
Fun shot though. I bet this would look fantastic with a tiny bit of burn work in the water (especially at the top) and printed large enough to let the girl be a bit larger that 640x480 allows... Message edited by author 2006-04-11 10:07:56. |

Pointe Shoes by angela_packardComment: W-oah! That's some serious balance someone's got there. Is this you or a model? Sorry, I'm bad with faces. I would love to see some more details in the shot description.
Fantastic shot! It definitely looks like the subject is floating as the center of balance doesn't seem right. Nice. |

Demiseby RKTComment: What a totally sweet picture! The lighting makes this claustrophobic, like it's in a narrow tunnel or something (?), and highlights the details in the wall while at the same time providing a mood. Other technical details are spot on.
I didn't vote in this challenge, but I still think this picture rocks.
I will honestly say though that I might have missed the doorknob thing... I don't think it's legal to draw a big arrow in Red or Yellow saying NO DOORKNOB HERE! SEE? in challenge photos...
On further inspection, I did notice that there only appears to be one hinge too.
Oh well, it still kicks.
I personally have a thing for weird doors though. Message edited by author 2006-04-11 09:53:50. |

Easterby thomaspeopleComment: Easter Eater?
I don't know what those are, but they look like they are either really yummy or really nasty.
I like how the middle one has a little speck reminiscent of a small circle for the mouth. As if it's surprised/worried about the prospect of being the next one down the hatch...
I'm sorry to say this, but I honestly don't like the picture.
The lighting, the model's make-up (POWDER!), messy yellow stuff everywhere, uninteresting hands and general composition are disappointing to me.
Using a white background might have helped to hide some things (like the lip-hair, which I might add is NOT considered unattractive in every culture, it's quite a mark of beauty in the philippines and some other asian countries, but in those cases, they like it more off on the sides) and softened the harshness of this rather stark picture.
Further, balancing the light would have REALLY helped this. Generally speaking, using the flash as a primary light source is a BIG no-no.
I'm not trying to be harsh here, just specific. |

Exclusive Spy Photo! Cheddar Cow Captured!by C_Steve_GComment: It definitely has the "spy camera" look.
Not sure if the spy camera look is really the best medium to score points...
I'm concerned that if I say it's soft and the colors are a bit weak (grass, weeds, yellow in the cow), you might have put these features in there for effect.
It's a fun picture though and I do actually like it. |

pINkTRUDER ALERTby obsidianComment: Love the title. Enjoyed the execution of the shot. My only real gripe is that the border could have stood to be a tiny bit brighter....
and the rest of the shot a little sharper...
And some of the reflections were softer on the far side of the pot.
Otherwise fantastic! |
