To me the composition of the man in the water makes this a very powerful image. Nice work!

Greetings from the Critique Club :-)

I see you signed up a little while ago and this is your first submission to a challenge. Congrats on taking the plunge. I scored the image a 5 in the challenge, here is why:

The base technical aspects is not bad. You composition is the strongest part of the image. I think the post processing of the image is the reason why it didn't score much higher then it did. The exposure is ok, but the lighting is a little flat. It's lacking contrast and color pop. It meets the challenge description well. I think the best advice I could give you is to study prior challenges that finished in the top 20. It helps to vote in challenges to give you some perspective on how successful images look/feel. We have some great tutorials here, along with the web it self. Keep shooting, reading & learning. It's fun to see how we start here and in time how we have improved.

1st thing: Welcome to DPChallenge!!! Great shot and score for your first challenge. I gave your image a 7.

You did a great job meeting the challenge description and that is very important here to score well. If a voter can't connect the image to the challenge, even if it's a good image it will score lower most of the time. The technical aspect of your image is done very well. The composition of the hay is right on, you might had cropped a little more off the bottom to get the horizon a little more off center. Having the sun behind the hay adds a ton to the shot. Your exposure is really good. The highlights/shadows works well. The over all color/tones of the image is good too. I do think it needs a little more pop in the colors/contrast. I don't know what processing program your using, but I think you could had bump the selective colors reds/blues/yellows a little and/or I like to use neutrals tab, it adds a little more contrast to the colors without blowing the highlights.

You have a Great eye for photography! Enjoy yourself here.

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Well this is going to be tough one to critique since I really like the image and voted it a 7. Congrats on a top 10 finish

First reaction: Cool! I really loved the background. The hooded people gave me a scary type of feeling. I related it to KKK here in the states which is kind of scary to me since I live in the NW USA and not that educated in that era. I'm not a religious person either, yet the historic feature of it fascinates me very much. I think the low angle perspective of the shot put this image over the top for me. Having the three people in front along with depth of the shot really works. I don't see a technical flaw at all here. I guess the only reason I didn't score it higher is I really couldn't tie it to a Fairy Tale, which is my misfortune.

Bottom line: Awesome work!

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

I didn't vote in this challenge so I haven't seen your image prior to this. If I had voted it probably would had gotten a 5 or < in this challenge. Here's why:

My first impression: Love it. I for one love baby pictures. This shot is a keeper for the baby album.

Technical Aspects: Great use of shallow DOF. Your exposure is good. The lighting is OK, but it helps to have some shadows to add to the depth of the image. The composition in it's self is good. I like how you shot through the handle to add some depth to the image. The color tones all work together well. The vignette might be a little to much into the image, kind of darkens it to much with in the inner part of the image. Over all technically done well. I'm not a fan of boarders, but I don't vote them down for that reason.

The main reason this shot didn't score well. The voters want to see a real connection from the challenge description to the image entered. I think only us parents know that she is sitting in a carrier type set. There is no real visual aspect of a chair any where within the image for the viewer to tie the image to the challenge. In the right challenge I believe the shot would had been in the mid 5's or so.

Congratulation on a wonderful new addition to the family. Snap lots of pictures of her as she grows, before you know it she'll be graduating from college.
