I don't like the big white bar she is leaning on though, it doesn't work in this picture like the other version.

I think it needs a little texture. I suggest you take a picture of wood grain somewhere, and sort of drag it over to the whiteness, and set it on overlay. Duplicate the layer and play with a few blend modes to get it looking right.
