I really like the shapes. However the limted range of levels leaves this image looking a bit muddy overall. Try to have at least one solid white and one solid black somewhere in the image (usually!)

Well, thanks for looking at this picture and your comment. Actually these are not birch trees -- they are pine trees -- and the trunks are actually anything but white. The trunks are (as best as I can see them) mostly gray with a hint of blue and brown, so I don't think the color is off that much. The place in the woods where I took this was pretty densely shaded but the sky was a clear blue at the time. The exposure was 2 seconds at f/11. You can get a better look at the trees in this larger version:

In the larger version ,you can also see that one of the ferns in the foreground was jostled by the wind just a bit during the long exposure.

Alex,

This is a beautiful image. One possiblility for improvement might be to crop off the top 1/5 or so in order to get below (and leave out) the very dark branches in the upper left corner.

Mark,

Thanks for the idea. Actually I went back and looked at the original file, and what you see here is the whole shot, just as I framed it. It isn't cropped at all. At least I was holding the camera horizontal!

Germaine,

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, when I picked this photo out of a bunch I shot at the fair something about its disjointed colors and content attracted me. When I was working on it, I actually did try straightening up the perspective lines in Photoshop and when I got it almost perfectly straight I no longer liked it. It seemed to lose the sort of zaniness that attracted me to in in the first place.

I suppose you are right that it would get dinged for the perspective in a challenge!

Despite the fact that it would be easy to mistake the frost for oversharpening halos, I think this picture still looks overshapened. It's an appealing scene that might be improved by not having the body of water in the center of the frame.
