Interesting shot, though you lose points from me for not shooting something rusted. I don't know if it is better or worse that you allude to understanding the challenge in your title but still submit something off topic. On technical merits, I like the lighting on the metal, but the dirty, stained tiles detract from the image somewhat.

IMHO the subject is not very interesting. Shooting with side/backlighting doesn't seem like the best way to highlight the rust on the trash can. The image is also too small to see much detail. The sign post and bright sidewalk in the background pull attention away from the main subject.

Where is the rust? I must give a low score for the lack of rust. Technically, the focus seems a bit soft throughout the picture, especially in the foreground at the lower right.
