I just came across it while traveling. I liked the lonely feel of it, but didn't do much with the shot for about a year, then stumbled upon it recently. I darkened it up, added some blur, tried to make it even more lonely and dark feeling. Still not sure what I want it to say exactly, but thanks for asking. (Now you've got me thinking.)

The first place shot may be a familiar technique, but relative to the other shots in the contest, it stood out as exceptionally aesthetically pleasing, creative, clear, etc. Yes, obviously yours was up there to. For whatever reason the other shot rated slightly more favorably with the audience.
Pat yourself on the back for taking a kick-butt shot that was hailed as superb by many, and, please, quit whining.

Quit whining? Or quit having an opinion? And as far as "familiar technique" that's quite an understatement.

Thanks to all who voted for me. I'm slightly discouraged that the old "shoot any object behind a plate of glass with water drops" routine hasn't got old for more people. Sorry to sound like a sore loser. I'm still grateful for my first ribbon.

I had a few people ask about the setup. It's on a large cyc wall, about 25ft wide, 20ft deep, 25ft high. (one of many benefits of working for a commercial photographer) Key light to left of model was a Profoto strobe in a 6ft octa softbox. Background was two more strobes with umbrillas.

Extraordinary? Try June free study, buddy. ;-)

Just a shallow DOF, only adjusted curves, saturation and color levels. I understand what you mean, though.

Great shot, very well composed, very painterly. Did you use the shadow/highlight filter? Or manually lighten up the foreground? I notice a bit of "glow" between the sky and tree trunk upper left. Still great shot
