Pls,pls can you explain how you got the BG? I have some cicada exoskelletons on a tree and wanted to take "exactly" this shot, but don't seem to get it right ... Of course it would have been great to get the animal emerging the "old" body, but that happened during the night I guess. |
hey Gaby .. i'll answer you here in case anyone is interested ..
for starters here is the original photo ..
i'm not sure what you mean about the background .. but if you mean about the blur then its all about the aperture .. and how close you are to the insect and how close it is to the background .. if that makes sense ..
i feel a bit weird telling you this as you are an amazing photographer ... and probably know what i'm telling you anyway ..
if you wanted to know about the other stuff .. like the colours etc ..
looking at my working tif file i can see that i did a sunlight action in Nik color efex ..
to get the warmer colours i used an overlay that i can share with you if you want it ..
i used the gradient tool in different colours to get the light top rhs .. and did a brightness and contrast adjustment layer to give it a boost .. |
Thanks so much - BRILLIANT post work. Thank you for sharing the original. I thought you got that beautiful light "naturally" - never occurred to me you produced it in post. I need to look into the Nik filters more. I have them but only ever use Silver for BW conversions. Thanks again and congrats - beautifully done.

Storm Brewingby glad2badadComment: I feel you overprocessed the details a bit too much and also the colours. Composition and subject (clouds) are great though. |

Skylinesby mluComment: I think the foreground is too dominant for this challenge. Love the clouds you found! |

Sailors take warningby wildirisComment: It's all about the sky here and the land elements just give it some "orientation" very nice. A bit too saturated for my taste. |

Winter skyby MargaretNetComment: Loss of detail in the darks in the mountains, otherwise very nice image. The sky definitely plays the leading role! |

Bare trees at sunsetby MadMan2kComment: a bit noisy and to me the trees are "unbalancing" the image - not quite in the center, not filling the bottom part ... |

Tropical Morningby CoryComment: The sky adds to the "tropical feel" for sure, but IMO, your foreground plays too much a role for this challenge. |
