"At a fixed aperture, focussing at a greater distance brings more of the foreground and background into the zone of sharpness." quote from National Geographic's Photography Field Guide.

The usual dramatic small DOF of a 50mm @ F1.8 is mostly seen with portraits shot from a relative close range. The focus point here is considerably further away.

For example, if you have the lens set at 28mm, f/1.8 and you focus on a spot 20meters away then you get sharp image between 10.5-216.9 meters.
