FIRST IMPRESSION: Great choice of subject but the lighting is a bit harsh.
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.
COMPOSITION: I like the composition of all three shots, though as a triptych I would have personally preferred the closeup of the wheel as the center image. It would have been more balanced in terms of types of shots and lightness of the shot.
TECHNICAL: Though the exposure is good, the harsh midday light on these images leaves them seeming a bit washed-out and flat. Different light (weather conditions or even shooting earlier/later in the day) may have added visual interest to the images.
CONCLUSION: A good, promising subject that could be strengthened with a bit more attention to lighting.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Great shot, worthy of printing and hanging!
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.
COMPOSITION: Excellent, consistent composition. My only nit is that the reflection in the first frame is not echoed in the other two. It also seems odd that your first shot is from slightly above the subject while the other two are more straight on. This inconsistency may have bothered the voters.
TECHNICAL: Exposure, lighting and color are flawless.
CONCLUSION: Great shot, and one I might expect to see hanging in a candy shop or for sale in Hershey. I'm frankly surprised this did not score higher than it did.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Bright, colorful shot. A rare capture of a bee at work.
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.
COMPOSITION: I am left wondering why you chose to crop off the top of the flower (or if that was accidental) as it does seem to break the flow of the shot. Centered composition works very well for this subject.
TECHNICAL: Exposure, lighting and color are flawless. Excellent choice of aperture; the shallow depth of field really helps draw attention to your subject.
CONCLUSION: Great shot. Odd to have the shot of the back of the bee and have him on his side, but for this type of shot I am not really bothered by that. Again, my only real issue with this shot is the cut-off top of the flower. Well-done!

FIRST IMPRESSION: Interesting textures but odd lighting.
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.
COMPOSITION: The composition is good, however the lighting draws the viewer's attention to the rock in the background rather than to the cockroach that is your main subject. This shot would have worked better (in my opinion) if the insect were in the light, so that the viewer's eye was drawn to the subject. In particular I find it disturbing that I can barely even see the head.
TECHNICAL: Exposure is good, depth of field draws the viewer back in to the subject but seems to conflict with the lighting.
CONCLUSION: Not a bad shot, probably the best you were able to do under the circumstances, but I wonder if with some patience you may have captured the insect in a better position.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Bright and colorful, plenty of punch.
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge
COMPOSITION: Composition is good. I like the inclusion of sky as it adds interest to the photo. You might try cropping tighter at the bottom and left though, and see if you like the results.
TECHNICAL: Exposure is near flawless. As an alternative, a wider aperture (lower number) would shorten the depth of field and help set your subject off from the background.
CONCLUSION: Great, colorful shot. If you have the opportunity you might try reshooting it at various settings and see if you can make it even better!

FIRST IMPRESSION: Great subject, great light, a little overexposed.
CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge without being cliché.
COMPOSITION: Good composition that draws the viewer to the subject in the frame and sets it off from the background elements.
TECHNICAL: Depth of field is good but I feel the shot is a bit overexposed. This may have benefited from a moderately shorter exposure time, or a levels adjustment in post-processing.
CONCLUSION: A good photograph, certainly better than average. A little more post-processing may help bring this shot to its full potential.
