Just your standard run of the mill duo-toned bug picture..
Its a Periplaneta brunnea, or Brown Cockroach. Found this little beastie at a local butterfly farm... Go figure..

FIRST IMPRESSION: Interesting textures but odd lighting.

CHALLENGE: Meets the challenge.

COMPOSITION: The composition is good, however the lighting draws the viewer's attention to the rock in the background rather than to the cockroach that is your main subject. This shot would have worked better (in my opinion) if the insect were in the light, so that the viewer's eye was drawn to the subject. In particular I find it disturbing that I can barely even see the head.

TECHNICAL: Exposure is good, depth of field draws the viewer back in to the subject but seems to conflict with the lighting.

CONCLUSION: Not a bad shot, probably the best you were able to do under the circumstances, but I wonder if with some patience you may have captured the insect in a better position.

Thanks for sharing and good luck in future challenges!

It's a bug! I know you didn't have a lot of lighting control, but the issues around this photo are mostly lighting related. The head is too shadowed, the rear is overly glarish. Clarity is good, where the lighting allows it. 6 Rob the Swash

I like darkness to build mood, and you've done that well here, but I do wish I could see this fella just a bit better.

Great shot, I just wish the bug's head was better visible like the rest of the body though.

Nice effect. The lighting on the bug's back is a tad too harsh though.

The reflected light off the rock works well to highlight the back on the bug - would be good see the head and legs more clearly. Wish you;d picked it up and put it higher onthe rock.
