Between the Linesby smudgeSMJComment: From a artistic standpoint, this is a terrific effort. From a technical standpoint, it's rather bland and uninviting to the viewer as it seems to be slightly defocused and overly dark - a lighter treatment would have helped or even a grayscale conversion. Sometimes an image, even one as artistically competant as this one is, is just an image. A good effort falling short in the technical sense. |

Sittin' Aroundby mrjacksonComment: Has somebody named these little guys yet? How about Piney Stand or Tree Boy? This reviewer has seen these little guys in a variety of situations and the authors should make a series out of them. Terrific concept - the image is a little larger than necessary - a fun treatment might have been to get closer and use bokeh to some effect in a linear shot. A lot of whimsy and humor in this and this reviewer always appreciates whimsy and himor. A technical and artistic success. |

railroadby organicComment: A great idea which is very difficult to pull off without some heavy post processing. The rail highlights are overdone which is a negative and maybe a by product of trying to capture or make the rays of light more distinct. While this image is technically flawed, it is a complete artistic success because it offers an ethereal feeling of time, space and dimension - it could very well be a noir book cover if done in black and white - which, come to think of it, might be something the author might want to consider just as an exercise to see if the image is improved. Sepia treatment might also be a good suggestion. The author should do themselves a favor and tinker with this using a post processor to see what happens - this image has a lot of potential if handled properly - a good print competition winner. |

Abandoned Bridgedby BujanxComment: This is one of those images where different top crops create seperate and very different images - very hard to comment on. From a technical standpoint it is nearly perfect - tones and highlights are extremely well controlled and the monotone effect with a light sepia touch is very effective. It is also an effective artistic effort that has a very minor issues like an ineffective and overly undetailed sky. A good solid effort which could be considered a top twenty image. |

Union Pacificby roadtripjunkieComment: A unique and different look at the challenge subject, this is a perfect concept executed in fine fashion. A technical and artistic success with nothing to critique or call as a major, or even minor, flaw. This should be a ribbon winner as it's very unique and well presented. |

Burn-outby varlyte79Comment: A terrific look at the mechanicals of an old steam engine with a few minor flaws. The white highlights could have been better controlled - a little different angle away from the subject would possibly have helped with that. A very interesting change from light to dark and full of rich detail. The image appears to be a little less sharp that it could be. A good, sound effort both technically and artistically. A worthy entry into the challenge. |

Diesel Delticby whiteflyerComment: From a technical standpoint, this is a terrific effort - crisp, sharp with everything detail well controlled and captured. From an artistic standpoint, it's rather bland and uninviting to the viewer. Sometimes an image, even one as technically competant as this one is, is just an image. A worthy entry into the challenge and directly related to the challenge subject. A good effort falling short in the artistic sense. |

The Passby rmezzoComment: Intriguing and out of the ordinary. The sky could have used a better treatment, but the focused areas a sharp, crisp and well detailed. A good idea and from a technical standpoint, well handled. Artistically, it falls short of being completely interesting inviting the viewer to observe more of what the author captured - not a lot of visual impact. Perhaps a little more motion would have helped to create some more interest. |

old style by ralphComment: A good concept and a very nicely composed image. It could have used a better crop taking off at least the top third of the image to concentrate the viewer's eye onto the subject. Good effective use of DOF. A very clever look at the challenge subject - well done. |
