Early Morning Lightby Ja-9Comment by salmiakki: Greetings from the Critique Club
First impressions. This is a nice scene that works quite well in black & white.
Compositionally, I would like to see a bit of a wider angle here, although I think to achieve a wider angle (to include some more of the water to the left) may have resulted in a swim!
For me the image feels a bit underexposed in the shadows, so you are losing some of the detail.
I read your processing notes and wondered if you had tried doing your editing in a different order? I find that doing the conversion to black and white before making any other adjustments gives me much better tones throughout. So I do my Nik Silver conversion and then only after that do any levels adjustments, contrast/brightness etc. I took the liberty of downloading this image (i have deleted it) and opened it in camera raw. I used the fill light slider and managed to bring back a lot of detail in the shadows, so give it another go, as I do think the missing detail hurt this in voting.
Finally, I do find the image to be a little over sharp. I think it's very difficult to get sharpening correct for images with a lot of detail. It's very easy to over cook.
Hope it was useful.
Sarah
