ulgy orangesby maisiebComment by Artifacts: Decent attempt at a still life, but the lighting is a little harsh and too much Neat Image was applied. Overall focus is too soft for my taste but that might have been your intention. The positioning of your main subject can be debated because it doesn't meet the ROT and most still life images seem to be centered, but it seems OK to me. Photography rules are only guidlines and each image is unique.
I'll bet the "fails to meet the challenge" crowd is killing you on this one. :) Pay no attention to that. |

General: This is a good idea to try and capture the white flowers against the dark background though the detail in the background is distracting. Also, the focus seems to be a bit off.
Composition: Due to the detail in the background the image is very busy. There is no one focal point. One way to solve this would be to zoom in, reducing the amount of background. This would also decrease the depth of field therefore emphasizing your chosen subject.
Exposure: The flash has produced a very harsh light on the subject in the foreground. This is probably due to being too close to it for the power of the flash. There are couple of solutions here, either backup so the flash does not wash out your subject or use flash exposure compensation.
Impact: There is not much impact in this image for the reasons stated above. Increasing the zoom could probably help here.
Attempting shots in very low light can be challenging to both the photographer and the camera. The camera can have a hard time getting a focus lock. The photographer can have a hard time adjusting the exposure properly when using flash. Experiment with flash exposure compensation and, to aid the camera in focusing, maybe use an extra light source on the main subject (other than flash).
Keep shooting.
